Like so many others, this is the day in history that changed my life. I was called up for my first deployment with the National Veterinary Response Team to help provide veterinary support to the hundreds of search and rescue dogs arriving in New York City 23 years ago. Two weeks later I was completely changed. The humbling experience of standing at the foot of what was known as the pile forever changed my perspective of what is important in life and what is just noise. I can still see and hear the ambulances going past me every day containing loved ones removed from the pile. Twenty three years later I can still smell 9/11. Prior to my deployment, I thought everything was urgent and the littlest things would cause my anxiety to come into play. When a client got upset with me and called me money grubbing, I got angry back and would simmer about it for days. When my doctor was taking too long in an appointment, I would announce my disappointment to the entire team and start frantically figuring out how to pivot the rest of the appointments. I thought everything required me moving at a fast pace and being perfect. And when things didn’t go quite as planned, my anxiety and my emotions would take over. Everything to me was a big deal. A two week deployment in New York City taught me about perspective. It taught me about what are important things and what is stupid shit that we shouldn’t get upset about. I’m not saying I’m the calmest person. My friends and family will tell you I still have a high sense of urgency, but I recognize this is something I need to continuously work on. Realize that all the complaining we do about the weather, or that brand new veterinary technician who isn’t living up to expectations or the doctor who moves a bit slower than everyone else doesn’t deserve your anxiety or your emotions. Those situations don’t deserve you going on and on to your colleagues about how they are making your life more difficult and how your day is ruined. Perspective. That new technician is trying the best they can. The doctor is suffering from imposter syndrome and they move slower because they are second-guessing themselves all the time. Perspective. Today we remember all those who are lost. For me, I think about all the perspective that was given to me… thrust into my face….teaching me life lessons about what truly is important. #September11 #NeverForget

Governance and reform of the VSA features in the Council Minutes of March 2024, pages 17-24. It appears that RCVS Council may well change to an appointed body with parity in numbers between veterinary professionals and lay members. This change has the support of current Council, BVA and the Chair of the Veterinary Schools Council. My concern is that any appointed system has the potential to remove the engagement with members. At present we elect our representatives from a broad number with the opportunity to scrutinize their candidate statements, experience and professional activities. We vote for our representatives and they are selected on a majority vote. In this way we are all connected with the RCVS and Council. An elected Council could consult more widely if additional information was required, with experts drafted in to provide specific expertise. An elected Council could have RCVS nominated representatives put forward? We would then all remain engaged with the process. Why have these approaches not been considered? In clinical practice we rely on our colleagues to make the best decisions for the animals under their care, and to consult more widely when there is uncertainty. Trust and empowerment in a professional setting. Trust and democracy are important in our representatives too.
