During hurricanes Ian, Nicole and Idalia, self-heling technology saved more than 200 million outage minutes for Duke Energy Florida customers. More than 70% of Duke Energy Florida customers benefit from self-healing and automated restoration technologies.· The company plans to install hundreds of miles of underground cable in areas that are identified as the most outage-prone lines. Approximately 48% of Duke Energy Florida’s primary power lines are underground and better protected from wind damage. · Teams have completed more than 4,000 miles of maintenance trimming on Duke Energy Florida’s distribution lines and 600 miles of planned work on the transmission side. · Over the past three year, more than 40,000 poles have been hardened through the Storm Protection Plan. · The company is also expanding capacity of the electric grid by building substations, expanding existing substations and installing larger circuits to provide reliable service in the growing state. ?? Reflecting on the incredible camaraderie within the electrical industry ?? This Memorial Day weekend, I had the privilege of witnessing the true brotherhood that exists within the electrical industry. Multiple crews from various companies, including the one I am proud to be a part of, were called out to aid in storm restoration efforts across Texas. What struck me the most was the seamless unity that prevailed among us. Amidst the chaos and urgency of the situation, we didn't see distinctions of companies or titles. Instead, we saw towns in dire need and tasks that demanded our attention. Shoulder to shoulder, we worked tirelessly towards a common goal - restoring power and hope to those affected by the storm. In a heartwarming display of compassion, some of our team members went above and beyond their duties by distributing water to the communities in need, even outside of their work hours. It was a powerful reminder that our impact goes beyond just fixing power lines; it extends to the lives and well-being of the people we serve. I am humbled to be a part of such a selfless and dedicated community. The spirit of collaboration and mutual support that I witnessed this weekend reaffirms my belief in the power of unity. We need to make wildfires like Smokehouse Creek a thing of the past. According to investigators, a downed powerline in Hutchinson County likely ignited the Smokehouse Creek wildfire, the largest in Texas history. This first spark produced over 1.2 million acres (over 486,000 hectares) of destruction, burning a large area of land from Stinnett, Texas to Arnett, Oklahoma. This wildfire was a lamentable tragedy, but considering the scale of the American power grid, fire almost seems inevitable. A study by Scientific American found that the US coast-to-coast electricity interconnection network boasts over 200,000 miles (321,868 kilometers) of high-voltage transmission lines and over 5.5 million miles (8.8 million kilometers) of local distribution lines, making it the largest in the world. It seamlessly connects over 2,000 utility providers for a truly continental power system. From the smallest rural towns to the largest urban cities, power can easily flow between them all. Utilities spend billions to maintain their networks. But fires are still happening. Our ability to monitor large swaths of the Earth all at once means we can help safeguard against these fires, as we can easily overwatch transmission lines and generation sites. On June 29, 2023, a severe thunderstorm storm hit Hancock County, Illinois, causing extensive damage to 120 transmission poles and nearly 6.5 miles of transmission lines. In one brief but powerful event, over 1,500 people from the small towns of Elvaston and Powellton lost power. The target date to restore service was set for August 18, 2023. However, the previous line built over 60 years ago by Prairie Power Incorporated was outdated and the electric utility could not simply replicate the original design. Toth and Associates, Inc. and Prairie Power collaborated with the Western Illinois Electric Cooperative, the area’s supporting distribution utility, and construction partner, L.E. Myers Co. to re-energize the area by the August deadline. Toth used PLS-CADD to streamline design updates and optimization based on field reports and material availability. Despite having to respot, respan, and realign the design due to supply constraints, PLS-CADD helped the teams create an initial design just one day after the storm. Additionally, the team completed the task of staking two miles of line in less than three and a half hours, with the remainder completed the following day. Toth and their collaborators finished reconstruction well ahead of the aggressive deadline thanks to their use of #Bentley software. Power was restored to residents 18 days ahead of schedule! 3 homes in the U.S. were obliterated last year from a result of underground utility strikes. All 3 were gas explosions. Two cats died in these explosions, but by some miracle no people were killed.
