?? Research Paper of the Week ?? Q: Does continuity reduce demand in general practice? ?? A: Yes, consultation demand would drop by 5% if all practices had the same continuity as top 10%. - The mismatch between capacity and demand in general practice is bigger than ever, especially in disadvantaged areas. - Addressing this mismatch is important to help recruit and retain GPs in disadvantaged areas. - Continuity is paramount for patients with complex health problems, difficult social circumstances or less health literacy. HOWEVER patients needing acute episodic care don't always need to see the same health professional. Well worth a read. https://lnkd.in/e9_2VWuH

?? Addressing Low Health Literacy in Healthcare Did you know that patients with low health literacy are more likely to visit the emergency room, experience longer hospital stays, have difficulty following treatment plans, and face higher mortality rates? ?? As healthcare providers, it’s our responsibility to bridge this gap and ensure our patients understand their health needs clearly. Here are some effective approaches to consider: ? Use clear, simple language (6th-grade level) ? Combine verbal and written communication ? Leverage pictures to explain complex ideas ? Apply the teach-back method (ask patients to repeat in their own words) ? Pay attention to body language ? Encourage open-ended questions for better understanding Improving health literacy can save lives and improve outcomes. Let’s prioritize this in our everyday practice! ?? #HealthLiteracy #PatientCare #HealthcareExcellence #PatientExperience #HealthEducation

In October 2023, the Australian Hand Therapy Association made a submission to the Department of Health and Aged Care of Health and Medical Sciences on the Unleashing the Potential of our Workforce – Scope of Practice Review. The AHTA welcomes this independent scope of practice review that will examine the barriers and incentives health practitioners face working to their full scope of practice in primary care. We support this critical initiative and stand ready to assist the Government where needed. Issues Paper 1 has been circulated as part of the Unleashing the Potential of our Health Workforce – Scope of Practice Review (‘the Review’). This independent Review focuses on health professionals who currently provide or have the potential to provide primary care. It also explores the available evidence of the benefits, risks, barriers and enablers associated with health practitioners working to their full scope of practice. Issues Paper 1 concluded that the literature review provided strong evidence of improved consumer access to care, consumer experience of care and health outcomes when health professionals are enabled to work to the full scope of practice. Health professionals working to the full scope of practice reduce the workload for the acute care sector, increase health professional utilisation and retention and create efficiencies at a system level. Our Scope of Practice Review Working Group, Advocacy Committees (National and state) and Public Health SIG are currently reviewing Issues Paper 1. The CEO is attending a 'round table' event in Melbourne on 13 February. https://lnkd.in/ghtbjrKr If you have any comments or feedback, please contact us.

Kudos BC. Fewer but more collaborative regulatory body tables will facilitate more team based primary care. Next up...consensus driven definition of primary care and services that every person should expect from primary care and then the competencies specific to those services defined. Where overlap exists among professions, regulatory colleges agree on competency requirements and where unique competencies and scope exist those are clearly defined and regulated. Health professional educational programs must then align and teach to those competencies and only then will the public be assured that those who are providing care in primary care settings are prepared to contribute to the delivery of expected team based primary care services offering continuity & are incentivized by governments for doing so. #primarycarecrisis #enabler #solutions www.TeamPrimaryCare.ca Scroll to Acceleration Agenda https://lnkd.in/gpchztuE

The Deepening Clinical Practice Conference is happening June 14! Check out Recognizing Bias and Inequities in Healthcare; Inviting Action with Terry Altilio LCSW, APHSW-C & Vickie Leff, MSW, LCSW, APHSW-C. In this morning session, participants will examine the effects of racialization and inequity in the healthcare system in the United States. Terry Altilio and Vickie Leff, highly experienced medical social workers, shine a light on implicit bias and the need for social workers, to understand the historical, racialized and minoritized systems in the US healthcare system. They will discuss their recent Reflections Project, a video series for providers, in which the words of patients and their families, and commentaries by a variety of scholars, are centered to bring experiences of racism, discrimination, and disparities in health care to the forefront. Different settings and aspects of practice such as pain management, autonomy, and aid in dying will be examined to investigate how unchallenged ideas, assumed values, and practices of racialization and minoritization influence therapeutic practice. Finally, participants will reflect on aspects of personal bias and institutional history that may influence the path to advocate and challenge inequities. Deepening Clinical Practice Conference, June 14, 2024, Smith College Campus Center, morning session: 10:35 a.m. - 12:05 p.m. ET. 1.5 CEs.
