What are the lessons learned from a decade of implementing cloudburst solutions with communities around the world? ?? ?? This pivotal question guided and informed some of the discussions during the 17th Waterfront Conference held by Waterfront Alliance last week. As a partner for this conference and an active supporter of community-led resilience, our representatives Anna Hochhalter, Simon Kates and Trine Stausgaard Munk (and her daughter) really appreciated the many interdisciplinary and explorative conversations. Together with long-time collaborators and new connections they reflected on potential strategies in resilience and the wider societal potentials in designing with water ?? ?? It was notable how much of the dialogue at the conference was about partnerships and collaboration and inspiring to hear Laurian Farrell speak about the need for adaptive leaders and the importance of human relationships in catalyzing change for resilience and stressing that equity must be at the heart of our work - and as Trine, who is head of sustainability in Ramboll Water and on stage as a panelist, stated: “True resilience and equity demands place-based and community-led interventions that are in concert with existing systems, not in conflict. Too much resilience is misguidedly pursued through top-down roll-out of “one-size-fits-all” standards. Resilience, including cloudburst thinking, has little room for standards and requires tailormade strategies and designs co-developed with communities and place.” Moreover, from our work with communities on Long Beach Island in the #ResilientLBI project with NEW JERSEY DEPARTMENT OF ENVIRONMENTAL PROTECTION #ResilientNJ program, we know many bay island restoration projects struggle to find available sources of clean dredge material. So, we appreciated that the panel on Harbor Deepening and Green Infrastructure discussed this challenge elsewhere and?prompted great discussion on potential solutions. Black Water Professionals Alliance Welcomes Three New Board Members Pioneering Leadership Strengthens Vision for 2025 The Black Water Professionals Alliance (BWPA) is thrilled to announce the addition of three distinguished leaders to its Board of Directors. This expansion reflects BWPA's commitment to elevating Black professionals as leaders in the water industry, advancing its mission of advocacy, collaboration, and outreach. Joining the board are: Mila Marshall, Ph.D. (Chicago, IL): A systems ecologist with a deep understanding of climate resilience and equity, Dr. Marshall has led initiatives addressing nutrient reduction, PFAS regulation, and environmental justice. Her role as a clean water advocate with the Sierra Club and her experience as an educator position her to inspire innovative solutions to environmental challenges. Garrett Skinner, PMP, CFM (Bowie, MD): A seasoned business development and project management leader, Mr. Skinner brings over two decades of expertise in water resource strategies and infrastructure projects. As a former vice president of corporate diversity initiatives, his leadership aligns with BWPA’s vision for a more equitable and inclusive water sector. Tosin Adetutu, PE (Newark, NJ): With over 12 years of engineering experience, Mr. Adetutu has driven transformational projects in water systems management, cybersecurity, and green infrastructure. His leadership in Newark's lead service line replacement program underscores his dedication to equitable water access and community-focused environmental programs. These accomplished professionals bring a wealth of experience and a shared passion for BWPA's vision: a water sector that reflects the diversity of the communities it serves. “We are honored to welcome Mila, Garrett, and Tosin to our board,” said Patricia Lindsay-Harvey, BWPA Board President. “Their leadership, expertise, and commitment to our mission will undoubtedly strengthen BWPA’s impact as we enter a new year of opportunities.” BWPA remains committed to fostering a thriving community of Black water industry professionals while championing equitable access to water resources.
