Mentorship "Is a Shame": Today, I learned about a deeply concerning decision at my alma mater, the University of Puerto Rico at Mayagüez (UPRM). A significant proposal aimed at empowering low-income engineering students, spearheaded by one of our esteemed professors, was not submitted for NSF funding due to administrative decisions. This proposal, part of the PEARLS project, sought to bring an additional $2M for research and implementation of strategies to enhance success among these students. It's disheartening to see such a crucial initiative, especially one promising scholarships, assistantships, and academic support, being overlooked. This is particularly poignant in light of the escalating costs of education and the decreasing affordability for low-income students at UPRM. In times like these, it's vital to remember the core values of education and its role in leveling the playing field for all. Our commitment should be towards creating opportunities and fostering an environment where every student can succeed, irrespective of their economic background. I stand in solidarity with the faculty and students at UPRM who are fighting for educational equity. Let's raise awareness and advocate for prioritizing the needs of our most vulnerable students. "Most of the institutions in the fledgling consortium, striving to redesign their way to a more secure future, would do so by reducing the number of academic credits they require from the typical 120 to as low as 90." ~I'm not sure that is solving anything, frankly. Wrong conversation. Ostensibly, the same issues exist, just in a shorter format: Degree programs predicated on outdated curricula; calendar-based format; Carnegie seat time metrics; outdated grade schema; horrible credit articulation from community colleges, and on and on. Lopping off one year may save a little money, but since most students now take 6 years (and roughly less than 70% finish), I'm not sure the cost savings really amount to much. If they are serious they should be looking at CBL.
