?? Congratulations to the Museum of West African Art (MOWAA) Art (MOWAA) on the opening of the Institute, the first building on MOWAA's campus in Benin City. AEA worked with MOWAA in 2021 to support the development of the museum’s strategy, business and operating plan – including its mission, vision and programmatic ambitions; underlying business model; management and governance structure; audience profile and positioning; and an account of its social, economic and cultural impact. We look forward to visiting the museum soon! It's #InternationalMuseumDay! Of course one does not need to wait for a specific date to share their love for anything, but we are just so pleased that such a day exists. Within and on their walls, in pillared corridors, glass cases, cupboards, shelves, pedestals, staircases, ceilings, cornerstands, tables, museums across the world, museums hoard aeons of stories. Each piece is always in conversation with the space around it. Exploring any museum is an overwhelmingly wonderful experience as you get tangled in a multitude of space-time push and pull. While time becomes a nonlinear vehicle taking your cognition and attention in different directions all at the same time, spaces swallow you in the way light and shadow and depth and distance play their play on your mind like imps. The thing is, as staggering as it all is, you would not want it any other way. Today, we also want to raise a toast to 'museum fatigue', which is a real thing, too. Your feet throb as you walk the last corridors and roam the last rooms of a museum, your head is abuzz with stories and your heart is in love with this world that is simply "too much" as Milosz once wrote. But we cannot help seizing any opportunity to be thus willingly entrapped in these enchanting curated spaces called museums and galleries. Which are your favourite museums and why? ... a very interesting issue for me is the property of artworks, that is a kind of a metaphorical issue... the link between cultural heritage and property is more actual-widespread-prevalent than the middle man can imagine... For the past several years the idea and sometimes implementation of returning art affects to the native home/site (if it still exists) is an ongoing topic of discussion here across the pond in the US as well, apart form Italy https://lnkd.in/d_4_r_J3

Let’s hope higher education is doing more than just following the NAGPRA regulations. Universities and colleges also need to figure out how to teach its implementation more effectively in degree programs. Anyone have an example of a degree program that’s particularly effective in teaching how to implement NAGPRA—i.e., more than just describing the law and rules, but actually involving students in its implementation through real-world practice?
After 20 years - a cultural shift in American Museums will finally be implemented as museums across the country scramble to hire qualified candidates to help them navigate the new NAGPRA guidelines. https://lnkd.in/eFwVCkmW

It's always cool to see the work that my colleagues are doing across Canada, especially a museum which leans in to the advantages of replicas and replica-making! Kudos to USask's Museum of Antiquities for emphasizing the advantages of using replicas for education. https://lnkd.in/gj5MZiHw In my dissertation, I draw on a number of articles (including Erin Thompson's recent article, https://lnkd.in/gWH25gMY, and the work of Constanze Hampp and Stephan Schwan, https://lnkd.in/gGWeJi27) to discuss how replicas can be used in engagement and reconciliation. Understanding the value of replicas for museums is essential to restitution. Restitution is a main focus of many of the stories featured in the Museum of Looted Antiquities.

Thinking about the future: Going beyond high watchmaking. "Knowledge is the most precious asset of humanity, even though human beings often forget that. Any initiative whose goal is the preservation and sharing of this knowledge must be celebrated – especially when we are talking about two centennial institutions of the calibre of Vacheron Constantin and the Metropolitan Museum of Art." ____ #essentialalgarve #art #culture #globalart #knowledge #MetropolitanMuseumArt #VacheronConstantin #LouvreMuseum?
