Environmental impact assessment: By mapping sensitive ecosystems and analysing data, strategies can be developed that minimise environmental harm. ?? Aiding asset management: GIS helps with effective management of assets by providing real-time data on conditions, maintenance needs, and operational efficiency. The States have used different mapping projections, so maps prepared by one State’s processes are not directly compatible with those of another. Thus, it is important to develop GIS data standards and interoperability for various end applications first. These efforts also need technology support and upgrading, while appropriate and enabling institutional arrangements will need to be worked out at state and city levels.

Wouldn’t it be nice to have a comprehensive system to manage all your assets from a single point? A system that not only gives you geographic intelligence about the location of your infrastructure, but also conditional information relating to your infrastructure. Wouldn’t it be nice to have the ability to predict problems, highlight areas of concern and plan proactive maintenance based on your assets current level of deterioration? Yes the reality is, there are traditional methods of asset management which comprise the use of paper maps, CAD files, pdf’s, mental maps etc, but do these methods give you the full picture? A geographic information system (GIS) lets us visualize, question, analyze, and interpret data to understand relationships, patterns, and trends. A GIS system effectively implemented in an estate would give the user ability to view all their assets in digital format, it would allow the user not only the ability to view their infrastructure geographically but also query information related to that infrastructure. Unlike paper based maps, you would have the ability to zoom into a specific infrastructure, click on the infrastructure and have instant access to a wide range of information relating to it.
