Advocate Health is helping advance the future of nursing – and the future starts now. We’re piloting an artificial intelligence solution from Microsoft and Epic that aims to transform nursing documentation. Developed with feedback gathered directly from nurses and with a keen focus on safety, the tool works by automatically capturing spoken observations and then populating a patient’s record for the nurse to edit if needed and sign off. That means nurses can focus more on their patients and less on paperwork. (A win for everyone!) “By automating the documentation related to routine nursing tasks, we are giving time back to nurses to do what they do best – care for patients,” said Katie Barr, senior vice president and chief nursing informatics officer for Advocate Health. Already a leader in nursing innovation led by its internationally recognized virtual nursing programs, Advocate Health is committed to advancements in technology that will support more than 42,000 nurses across more than 1,000 sites of care.

"Intermountain Health?joined?a collaboration with Microsoft, Epic and other health systems to enhance nursing workflows using ambient listening technology. Intermountain's Chief Nursing Officer, Mandy Richards, DNP, RN, told?Becker's?the primary motivation for joining the collaboration was to ease the often cumbersome workflows that pull nurses away from patient interactions. "Nurses want more than anything to spend time with their patients," she said. "With the aging population and a projected nursing shortage, we have to think about how we can make care more efficient." A recent time-motion study conducted by Intermountain revealed that nurses spent approximately 28% of their time on documentation. In response, Intermountain set a goal to reduce that figure by implementing this technology, which could boost bedside time from 36% to more than 40%. The partnership with Microsoft and Epic could offer a promising solution. Microsoft brings its technical expertise, while Intermountain contributes its understanding of healthcare operations, particularly in nursing workflows. This enables Intermountain to provide Microsoft with real-time, daily feedback, ensuring that the technology is shaped by the needs and insights of front-line nurses."

The article discusses the changing landscape of nursing and the crucial role of nursing informatics in addressing current challenges. Summer Blackerby, RN, chief nursing officer at CoxHealth Hospital, shares insights on the complexities of modern nursing and the importance of technology in improving patient care. Key points from the article include: Nurses face challenges such as caring for an aging population with complex conditions, clinician shortages, information overload, and alarm fatigue. Healthcare systems are seeking solutions to automate time-consuming tasks, allowing nurses to focus more on bedside care. Technology adoption is crucial for streamlining nursing workflows, but it must be implemented thoughtfully to avoid adding unnecessary tasks. Nursing informatics plays a vital role in assessing and identifying how technology can truly integrate into clinicians' workflows. Personalized care is enabled by providing nurses with the right information at the right moment, supported by robust technology infrastructure. Adopting technology that enables nurses to provide care beyond the bedside is important as care delivery models evolve and patients become more tech-savvy. Virtual care and in-hospital remote monitoring systems help redistribute the care load and standardize care across the spectrum. https://lnkd.in/e-vsxzFa #healthcare #nursing #healthcareit #PatientEngagement #PatientCare

Advanced Nursing Certifications: Elevating Patient Care Quality ?? In today's rapidly evolving healthcare landscape, the role of advanced nursing certifications has never been more crucial. These certifications not only enhance the skill set of nurses but also significantly improve the quality of patient care. From specialized knowledge in critical care to expertise in pediatric nursing, these certifications empower nurses to deliver more precise, informed, and compassionate care. One of the most compelling benefits of advanced nursing certifications is the positive impact on patient outcomes. According to a study by the American Association of Critical-Care Nurses (AACN), hospitals with a higher percentage of certified nurses have lower patient mortality rates and fewer medical errors. This correlation underscores the importance of continuous professional development in nursing, which directly translates to better patient safety and satisfaction. ?? Moreover, advanced certifications foster a culture of excellence and continuous improvement within healthcare institutions. Nurses who pursue these certifications often become leaders and mentors, driving innovation and best practices in their teams. This ripple effect not only enhances the individual nurse's career but also elevates the entire healthcare environment. As we continue to navigate the complexities of modern healthcare, investing in advanced nursing certifications is a strategic move that benefits both patients and healthcare providers alike. #NursingExcellence #PatientCare #HealthcareInnovation

“In Australia and around the world, we have seen a significant increase in digital technologies in the health care sector,” says study lead author Dr Priyanka Vandersman, a Senior Research Fellow at Flinders University’s Research Center for Palliative Care, Death and Dying (RePaDD). “In?aged care, these digital approaches can include helping with care planning and assisting with managing medication, but we need to ensure that nurses are equipped with the digital skills needed to use these tools effectively, while continuing to provide high quality, person-centered care.” #agedcare #eldercare #healthcare #virtualcare #digitalhealth #palliativecare
"Digital technology can better assist nurses to manage end of life care in residential aged care facilities but ensuring its impact requires better tools, training, and ongoing support, a new study has found. The results call for nurses to be included when digital innovations are in development, so they can actively shape their implementation and ensure high-quality, compassionate care for residents in their final stages of life." Nursing: A Time for Paradigm Shift The traditional model of nursing, often focused on executing orders, is outdated. A paradigm shift is necessary to unleash the full potential of nurses. * Empowerment: Instead of simply following orders, nurses should be empowered to diagnose, treat, and develop personalized care plans. For example, a nurse with advanced training could assess a patient's risk of falls and implement proactive measures to prevent them. * Leadership: Nurses should lead quality improvement initiatives. They can analyze patient data to identify areas for improvement, such as reducing hospital-acquired infections or optimizing medication administration. * Holistic Care: Nurses should address the whole person, considering their emotional and social needs alongside physical health. For instance, a nurse can connect a patient with social services to address housing insecurity, which can significantly impact their recovery. * Technology Integration: Utilizing telehealth, electronic health records, and data analytics can improve patient care. Nurses can remotely monitor patients' vital signs, ensuring timely interventions. * Collaboration: Strong collaboration with physicians, therapists, and other healthcare professionals is key. For example, a nurse can facilitate communication among the care team to ensure coordinated discharge planning. A paradigm shift in nursing is crucial for a more patient-centered and effective healthcare system.

The traits and focus of #NurseInnovation are unique and unlike any other innovation - just like nursing informatics is a specialty form of informatics for 1. Who's at the helm, and 2. Who it serves. Likewise, nursing innovation traits are grounded in the unique skills and experiences that nurses bring to healthcare to benefit - (yes, nurses, nursing processes - perhaps) but the care, provision, processes, and outcomes of patients. And that's a key distinction. When I hear about "healthcare innovation", my mind immediately centers on physician-led initiatives or innovations benefiting physician medical practice and delivery with little room for anyone else. And there's no shade or criticism there, but we often see -- healthcare advantages made/created/deployed for physicians first without a practical plan to assist other clinicians in their practice. (And -- it's been said that the root is related to physician's profit drivers and not cost-centers (Nurses)). So for #2 for why nurses are great innovators .... We are Systems Thinkers! + Nurses have a holistic view of healthcare systems, understanding how different components interact and consider the end from the beginning. + We can identify inefficiencies and opportunities for improvement across workflows and processes. + Our training set us up for success and this is something that we use every day!
