Why are we being asked to work before we even start the job? I can understand "Here's some background information you can read over for your first few days" for some roles but expecting someone to START WORKING BEFORE THE START DATE is unreasonable. It sounds like a)the start date should be moved up and b) you're trying to avoid paying this person for part of the work they're about to do.
