Two critical challenges in health care are converging: the more than decade delay in the adoption of new research into clinical practice and the growing threat of antimicrobial resistance (AMR) caused by antibiotic overuse. This delay, along with the rise of drug-resistant infections, puts patients – especially children – at higher risk. With $2.5 million in funding from the Patient-Centered Outcomes Research Institute (PCORI), AdventHealth is fast-tracking research-backed practices to treat acute respiratory tract infections (ARTI), one of the most common pediatric health concerns. What is croup? https://lnkd.in/gaE6fPg8 Croup is a common pediatric respiratory condition characterized by inflammation of the larynx, trachea, and bronchi, often due to viral infections, particularly parainfluenza virus. It typically presents with a barking cough, stridor, hoarseness, and respiratory distress, most commonly in children aged 6 months to 3 years. Symptoms are usually worse at night and can range from mild to severe. Diagnosis is primarily clinical, based on history and physical exam. Mild cases can be managed with supportive care and humidified air. For moderate to severe cases, corticosteroids (e.g., dexamethasone) are first-line treatments, and nebulized epinephrine may be used in severe cases. Monitoring for respiratory fatigue and hypoxia is essential, as some children may require hospitalization. Always ensure proper follow-up care.

Respiratory Syncytial Virus (RSV) is a common virus that can sometimes lead to severe illness, especially in infants under six months of age. A new preventative medication is available to eligible infants born at Mount Sinai Hospital during the RSV season (November to April). “We finally have access to a medication that can significantly decrease the risk of severe RSV infection for all infants, and reduce the number of related hospitalizations,” says Mount Sinai staff neonatologist, Dr. Yenge Diambomba. Let's understand sepsis, its signs, and prevention from Dr. Lakmeel Latheef, Specialist General Paediatric and Neonatologist, on the occasion of Paediatric Sepsis Awareness Week. Sepsis is the body's response to infection, which can cause injury or damage to overall tissue or organs. It is characterized by an abnormal heart rate, a high or low temperature, and disorientation. Seek timely attention for appropriate care and treatment. For sepsis, prevention is the most important thing, like proper handwashing and proper vaccination. We are deeply moved and inspired by the courageous journey of Craig Mackinlay, Conservative MP for South Thanet, who has returned to Parliament after undergoing a quadruple amputation due to a severe sepsis infection. Craig Mackinlay's story is a powerful reminder of the critical need for awareness and early detection of sepsis. On September 28, 2023, he fell ill rapidly, showing severe symptoms that led to multiple organ failures. Despite the immense challenges, he has shown remarkable resilience and determination. Sepsis, often misunderstood and underdiagnosed, is an extreme response to infection that can lead to life-threatening complications. It is vital to recognize the symptoms early, which can range from confusion and shortness of breath to extreme pain and clammy skin. Prompt medical care is essential to prevent organ damage and save lives. At LoopDx, we are committed to advancing diagnostic tools to identify sepsis at the earliest stages. We believe that through innovation and awareness, we can help prevent such devastating outcomes and improve patient care. #SepsisAwareness #HealthcareInnovation #CraigMackinlay #Resilience #LoopDx https://lnkd.in/ddVtQpYH

Cholangiocarcinoma Awareness Month 2024 Facctoid no 15: Stents can block … A biliary stent may need to be replaced from time to time as they can become blocked and cause a biliary tract infection (cholangitis). Symptoms of a blocked stent/infection include: ? High temperature/fever ? Shivering, shaking ? Jaundice (yellowing of the skin or whites eyes or both) ? Change in stool or urine colour (pale stools, dark urine) ? Itching If any of these symptoms develop, they should not be ignored. A biliary tract infection can rapidly become serious, and may lead to biliary sepsis. It is important to contact your doctor or CNS (Clinical Nurse Specialist) as soon as possible for advice, as antibiotic treatment may be needed and the stent may have to be replaced. For more information on stents see: https://lnkd.in/eMWc7wfj #FebruaryCCAwareness * A temperature of 37 is normal for an adult

Biologic dressings play an important role in burn care. Those containing amniotic membrane or collagen create a protective barrier that helps reduce inflammation, prevent infection, and support the regeneration of damaged skin. ??Lymphangitis?? A patient arrives to triage with complaints of pain to a bug bite. Seems pretty minor, right? Until you look at the wound and see that there is a nice red line streaking from the site up the arm towards the heart. This is called lymphangitis. It is happens when an infection, most often caused by bacteria, but sometimes virus, parasite or fungus enters the lymphatic system causing an infection. The dangers of lymphangitis is just how FAST it can starts, spreads and how serious it can become. If left untreated, it can spread into the blood stream, causing sepsis and possibly death. Lymphangitis is most often caused by: ?? bug bites or stings ??puncture wounds ?? surgical incision requiring stitches ??cellulitis Symptoms include: ?? hallmark red streaking line ??fever ??chills ??headache ??flu like symptoms Treatment is dependent on cause. It can include antibiotics, antifungal or antivirals. Depending on if lymphagitis has entered the bloodstream, hospitalization would be required. Because of how fast lymphagitis can spread, identification and treatment is key to prevent sepsis. Nurses, have you cared for patient’s with lymphangitis? Attorneys, have a case that dealt with a lymphangitis diagnosis? ?? Taking my 14 years of nursing experience and using it to assist in the legal field ?? ??
