China currently controls more than 95% of the global LFP/LMFP materials and battery production. The Chinese have adopted lower-cost LFP, streamlined its supply-chain and developed technologies (blade cells, and cell-to-pack designs) allowing them to produce EVs at lower costs than their American and European competitors focused on NMC technology (more expensive and less permissive cell format and pack design). Americans and Europeans, to protect their automotive industry, have implemented tariff barriers or quotas on the import of EVs, batteries, and raw materials for cathodes and anodes made in China. Several American and European OEMs are now turning to LFP/LMFP batteries to lower the cost of their low-and mid-range EVs, either by purchasing LFP batteries directly from China, or through partnerships with Chinese cell and pack manufacturers for production outside China, using some Chinese resources (e.g. FePO4, a precursor to the manufacturing of LFP and LMFP). China is about to implement an export ban on the manufacturing technologies around LFP and LMFP, including FePO4 and lithium precursors. China is positioning itself to exert a global monopoly on LFP/LMFP materials and batteries. Consequently, the American and European industries (EV and energy storage) become excessively dependent on China and its control on price and supply. The solution is to establish a competitive LFP/LMFP production capacity outside of China, with a supply chain of raw materials also available outside of China. ??Last week, REC Silicon signed an agreement to supply Sila Nanotechnologies, Inc. with high purity silane gas. Both companies have operations in Moses Lake, an emerging US hub for silicon anodes. ?? Silane gas is a key component of many next-generation silicon anode materials. By 2032, supply of silicon anode materials derived from silane gas is forecast by Benchmark Mineral Intelligence to rise 650% and their market share of the silicon-containing anode market to reach 10%. ?? “There is a lot of innovation in different engineered silicon anode active materials to improve performance and stability.
