Congratulations to Devinder Mahajan, PhD on receiving the State University of New York (SUNY) Technology Accelerator Fund (TAF) Class of 2024 Award for his work in large-scale hydrogen storage and separation. Devinder Mahajan, professor of materials science and chemical engineering and director of the Institute of Gas Innovation and Technology (I-GIT), and his research team at Stony Brook University developed a single system for storage and release of blended hydrogen and methane that operates under near ambient temperature and pressure conditions. This system is able to overcome the significant challenges related to efficient storage and on-demand release of hydrogen. SUNY invested $425,000 through the TAF to support groundbreaking projects at seven campuses that could have a profound impact on how we treat serious illnesses, safeguard our environment, and strengthen New York’s high-tech electronics industry. Decentralized hydrogen-oxygen co-production via electrolysis for large hospitals with integrated hydrogen refueling station In the pursuit of greener and more self-sufficient healthcare operations, this study presents an integrated economic and environmental analysis of on-site co-production of oxygen and hydrogen through proton exchange membrane electrolysis, specifically designed for the Santa Maria Hospital in Lisbon, Portugal. The proposed system aims to meet the hospital's oxygen demand while simultaneously producing hydrogen for use in fuel cell electric vehicles such as ambulances. A 1.5 MW PEM electrolyser is found to be sufficient to meet the hospital's O2 needs while generating hydrogen at a levelized cost of hydrogen of 4.6 €/kgH2. When considering the implementation costs of an on-site hydrogen refueling station, an O2 drying and storage unit, as well as the avoided costs in bulk liquid O2 purchases, the break-even point for the sale of H2 at the refueling stations is 2.4 €/kgH2. Apart from the economic benefits that could be achieved by selling the produced H2 above this price, the environmental analysis showed that 1874 tons of CO2 emissions per year could be avoided by the implementation of the concept proposed here. This integrated system not only contributes to the hospital's energy independence but also serves as a model for sustainable solutions in the healthcare sector, with significant environmental and financial benefits. Knowledge is power Yes, but... More than that. Scientific knowledge serves as the fundamental root, providing the nourishment for innovation, progress, and informed decision-making across all facets of society. Which is fundamental for our consulting jobs at LGI. While my background may encompass degrees in Engineering or an MBA, coupled with years of experience in the Sustainability field, there's value in refreshing one's understanding. So I've recently started various courses to further strengthen my scientific knowledge and understanding. For instance, Frontiers of Science: Climate & Us, by professors David John Helfand and Ivana Nikolic Hughes from Columbia University. I particularly liked the approach of presenting arguments labelled as Facts, Physics, Feedbacks, Fictions or Foreshadowing. The whole course was a treasure trove of clear explanations and simplicity. And a reminder of the challenges we are facing and that we need to solve. Link for the course in first comment
