Wonderful to spend the past three days with the GlobalMindED community. I appreciate the opportunity to connect with a diverse group of amazing people across many sectors. There is much to do within the K-12 sector (and in each individual sector) and there is value in thinking about how our sector-specific work fits into the larger ecosystem. K-12 can lay the foundation for success in post-secondary education and the workforce, especially if we focus on students gaining the broader set of skills and dispositions they need to succeed and thrive in an ever evolving world. Competency-based education provides design principles to make this a reality – both empowering students to learn the essential competencies they need and to have the know-how to apply their learning and continue to learn. With fewer and fewer students able to attend in-person orientation events due to work or family obligations, Amelia Elmore, Director of Enrollment and Student Success, and other staff at Sampson Community College searched for a solution. To overcome this physical barrier and create more access, staff created an orientation course using a popular learning management system. Manually enrolling students into the course proved to be too time-consuming and student success staff at SCC recognized the need for a virtual onboarding solution that could do more. With Advantage Orientation, SCC is empowering more students to persist through orientation completion and eventually through the enrollment process.
