The £500M Strategic Pipeline Alliance project offers lessons for the delivery of future water infrastructure schemes. Sotiris Kanaris reports. Enhancing water supply resilience is challenging for Anglian Water. The East of England, where it operates, is the UK’s driest region and is experiencing considerable population growth. In addition, it has important wetland ecosystems, meaning that it must minimise water abstraction. Anglian Water decided to implement Project 13 principles for the delivery of SPA, with Farrans, Mott MacDonald Bentley (MMB), Costain and Jacobs working with the company as enterprise partners in the Strategic Pipeline Alliance. ?? Protecting #WaterResources, allowing for #ClimateChange and population growth as well as drought resilience for all communities has never been more challenging. Particularly in the East of England: it’s the most water-scarce area and receives a third less rainfall than the rest of the country. ?? Read the latest in New Civil Engineer on how Anglian Water Services' Strategic Pipeline Alliance?(SPA), an innovative partnership between Anglian Water, Jacobs and partners (Farrans Construction, Mott MacDonald JN Bentley and Costain Group PLC), is building a safer, future-proof water supply for the East of England. SPA is the biggest drinking water grid program in the U.K. in a generation and one of the largest #infrastructure programs in Europe. It relies on diverting water from the wettest areas in the north of the region (Lincolnshire) to the driest areas in the south and the east by building over 310 kilometers (~192 miles) of interconnected pipelines. Here’s our latest video for the Central Interceptor project
Hamish pretty much says it all in the video, but here's a quick recap ?? Our Central Interceptor team have been testing six giant pumps that once up and running will take wastewater from the Central Interceptor tunnel to our Māngere Wastewater Treatment Plant for processing. The pumps have come all the way from Germany to do their thing in the 09. If you haven't already, take a look at the video and see what's been happening since they landed in Auckland ?? Thames Water bidders day for £2.2bn reservoir scheme Thames Water is planning to hold an industry bidders day in March for its planned major reservoir project. Planned reservoir to south of Oxford, near Abingdon The Abingdon reservoir in Oxfordshire could cost up to £2.2bn to build and would supply water to 15m people across the South East. Consultants Arup and Binnies have already been appointed joint venture technical partners for the scheme and Costain has started clay compaction trials to understand the ground conditions at the site. This fieldwork programme will help to inform an application for development consent in 2026. If development consent is granted in 2028, construction is expected to start in 2029 for opening in 2040. At the event, Thames Water will update contractors and investors on the development of the reservoir, including the company’s commercial and procurement strategies for two large-scale future opportunities: Infrastructure Provider: The IP will be responsible for taking forward the design, building, and financing the majority of assets within the project. Main Works Contractor: To construct and commission under a target price contract, working initially with TW and then the IP. An invitation to tender for the key roles on the project will be issued in October this year. Mohit Farmah, head of procurement and supply chain at #ThamesWater, said: “We are excited to kick-start the year by getting the next stage of market engagement for our proposed reservoir underway. “Contractors and investors have a crucial role to play in informing our approach and helping drive this vital project forward. We have been encouraged by the level of interest the market has shown to date. “I encourage all interested parties to register their interest to engage with us and shape the future of this vital project, including our spring market engagement event on Monday 17 March”. Firms need to register their interest in the market engagement by clicking here before 24 January. https://lnkd.in/eDFNwtza
