The latest issue of the Service Design Network's Touchpoint magazine marks a special milestone, as I had the honor of serving as a guest editor. A big thank you to Jesse Grimes and Birgit Mager for the invitation. This role offered a novel experience, building upon my previous engagements with the magazine, including being featured as an interviewee and having my profile highlighted in 2013, as well as contributing an article in 2023. For external service design teams, the collaboration with the (client) organisation often ends with the delivery of a service strategy, encapsulated in artefacts such as personas, journey maps, high-fidelity prototypes and blueprints. Participating in the Elisa Design Summit on ”Scaling Design Leadership” offered a wealth of insights. One fascinating discussion was led by Katrina Alcorn on ”Harnessing the Power of Design in Your Business.” She shared an insight about optimal team ratios between design, product management, and engineering for efficient workflows, suggesting a rule of thumb of 1:1:8 for enterprise software teams. This sparked a thought: What’s the optimal ratio for content design within this framework? Alcorn’s point highlights the importance of balanced teams for enhancing efficiency and productivity. This mirrors Rachel McConnell’s concerns in the book ”Leading Content Design” about the ”content trap,” where content designers, spread too thinly, struggle to make substantial contributions, impacting work quality. This leads me to wonder, how should we adjust content design staffing to ensure depth, quality, and strategic impact? Avoiding the content trap requires thoughtful integration of content design into the team structure, but what does that look like in practice? A big appreciation for the 2-day event with leaders like Maria Giudice, Katrina Alcorn, Michelle Morrison, and Kevin Yuda.
