The Call for Poster Abstracts for the 2025 ATPPS Annual Conference taking place Feb. 20-22 in Louisville, Kentucky, is now open! Submissions can cover a wide array of topics related to Athletic Training in the physician practice.?Suggested content areas include: ·????????Impact of athletic training in the productivity, throughput, or financial performance ·????????Best practices for treatment of orthopedic conditions ·????????Pre or Post-Surgical recommendations for care or orthopedic patients ·????????Downstream impact of orthopedic services to health systems ·????????Intra-operative workflow or cost reductions ·????????Or other orthopedic or athletic training scholarship Submissions can be across four primary categories.?These include:??? 1. Original Research: This includes survey, qualitative, or mixed-methods research. It must be present findings about healthcare issues related to the Athletic Training profession. These may include systematic reviews and meta-analyses conducted by the speaker. 2. Critically Appraised Topic: Should present the best available evidence to answer a focused clinical question using publications from the prior 10 years (preferably 5 years) summarizing 3 to 8 published abstracts. 3. Clinical Practice Recommendation: Should present an innovative clinical practice including published evidence on why the practice is recommended and its benefits over standard alternatives to that practice. 4. Laboratory/Workshop for Practice Enhancement: This abstract should summarize activities of a laboratory/workshop including the skills that should be obtained and the evidence behind the need for those skills.) Hippocrasy: How Doctors Are Betraying Their Oath “An over-reliance on medicine is bad for everyone”, say Australian orthopaedic surgeon Ian Harris and rheumatologist Rachelle Buchbinder in their book Hippocrasy: How doctors are betraying their oath (2021). In the book, two world-leading doctors reveal the true state of modern medicine and how doctors are letting their patients down. They argue that the benefits of treatments are often wildly overstated and the harms understated. That overtreatment and overdiagnosis are rife. And the medical system is not fit for purpose: designed to deliver health care not health. There is an irony. “We scour the paper each day to see if five people died from COVID-19, and yet we have something that is wasting an enormous amount of money, harming untold people and there’s no reaction to it in the public.” The two scholars are talking about the negative consequences of medicine that affect tens of thousands of Australians every year. “People see it as the price for the wonders of medicine, and it’s a price we definitely don’t have to pay.” This powerful exposé blows the lid off everything from rampant overdiagnosis and overtreatment (revealing the tests, drugs and treatment that provide no benefit for the patient), to the role of Big Pharma and the inherent problem of a medical system based on treating rather than preventing illness. I see more and more podiatrists not calling themselves “podiatists” or not using their credential as “DPM” but instead calling themselves “foot and ankle surgeons” or being listed in directories under “orthopedics”. This confuses and misleads patients tremendously. While I do think there is a need and a role for podiatry in a multidisciplinary limb preservation program, I wish they would continue to provide basic diabetic foot care which none of the ones in my area want to do. They won’t trim diabetic nails or monitor diabetic feet. They do want to operate and sometimes get in over their heads without consulting vascular or general or orthopedic surgery and I see those poor results. I teach my med students and residents and Fellows that the body is a unified being with mind, body and spirit all affected by disease or injury in one part affecting the entire system. Diabetes affects EVERY system in the body from the eyes to the pancreas to the liver to the skin and hair, not just the ankle and foot. You have to understand the anatomy and pathophysiogy of this highly complex disease and the healing processes to appropriately treat and manage these patients. Training is still variable in different parts of the country as is scope of practice. Single board certification, consistent residency training national standards of practice and interdisciplinary collaboration all need to be implemented to improve care for our patients.
