FUN FACT FRIDAY!!!
DID YOU KNOW???
The tradition of carving jack-o'-lanterns for Halloween
comes from the Irish and Scottish legend of Stingy Jack, or Jack of the Lantern.
Irish and Scottish people began carving scary faces into turnips and potatoes to frighten away evil spirits. They would place the carved turnips in windows or near doors on Samhain, the Celtic night that is now Halloween in England. When Irish immigrants moved to the United States in the late 1800s, they brought their tradition of carving jack-o'-lanterns with them. Since pumpkins were native to the region, they began carving jack-o'-lanterns from pumpkins instead of turnips.
It is interesting to me that a tradition that has become so common originated with something that may seem bizarre now a days. Unlike a turnip with a creepy face, health plans of old are really that scary, unless you are paying a premium, lets say, for a Medigap plan that is equal to a maximum out of pocket on an advantage plan. I have seen this many times. An advantage plan can be your jack o lantern. It can give you so much more, like vision, dental, hearing, and drug coverage. Make sure you aren't using turnips this Halloween/AEP season and talk with a local agent about what health plans are right for you.
