Is there a disability support network for charities and charity professionals or volunteers in the UK? If there isn't, I'm interested in setting one up! I think there's a need for a voluntary network where disabled people and charities/non profits can come together to share best practice, ideas and lived experience on all things accessibility and inclusion. My fledgling idea is for this to be free in order to remove any barriers. Maybe you're a disabled person who wants to network with other disabled people or wants to help make the charity space more accessible and inclusive. Maybe you work for or volunteer for a charity that's starting its journey towards becoming more accessible and inclusive and doesn't know where to start, or is worried about asking the wrong questions. What would you do with an extra ￡1000 a month? ?? Splash the cash on fancy dinners at top restaurants? ?? Go on some luxury holidays? ?? Or get that exotic pet you've always dreamed of!? ￡1000 a month makes a huge difference to someone's quality of life... Research by disability charity Scope found that households with at least 1 disabled adult or child faced increased living costs of ￡975 a month on average in 2023. This went up to ￡1248 a month in households with 2 or more disabled adults and 2 or more children. Extra costs relating to someone's disability - for example, higher energy bills as a result of using assistive technologies - equate to a staggering 63% of a disabled household's income, after housing costs. Georgina Colman has set up The Purpl Co Ltd to try and do something about this situation: offering a discount programme specifically for disabled people, to start offsetting this unfair financial burden. What a super few days spending time with some of the amazing team at Helping People Achieve! HPA is a long-term provider of disability support services and supported employment within the Darwin Region since 1963. The amazing team provide support to people living with a disability through delivering outreach services, providing affordable accommodation and creating job opportunities through supported employment. I was very fortunate to meet with a number of the team this week to better understand their roles and how they contribute to the wellbeing of HPA participants. My cup is definitely full for the week after spending time with just some of these amazingly dedicated people who absolutely love with a passion the work they do! ?? For Darwin locals, did you know that HPA would love some donations in the way of items such as: ?? Art and craft materials, paints, etc. ?? Magazines ?? Clothing ?? Old cookware ??
