On a mission to ensure that Forsler.com supports forest management across various countries, I've been exploring the differences in forestry practices. Last week, I touched on the concept of '??????????????????????????????' in Swedish forestry — a classification system that defines the stages of a forest stand's lifecycle and its corresponding management needs. The stages, known as '??????????????????????????????', represent the progression of forest development: ?????????????? (????, ????) – Unprepared land or land prepared for planting ???????????????????????? (????, ????) – Young forest over 1.3 meters, ready for pre-commercial thinning ?????????????????????????? (????, ????) – Mature forest ready for commercial thinning ???????????????????????????????????????????????????? (????, ????, ????) – Forest ready for clear-cutting or natural regeneration ?????????????????????????????? ???????? (????, ????, ????) – Low productivity forests This structured planning seems especially practical (and perhaps essential) for managing large areas with relatively few species. In contrast, forests in Denmark often has smaller, more diverse stands with species that grow at different rates. This variety makes it difficult to apply a single treatment across large areas. As I continue to learn about Swedish forestry practices, I’d love to connect with anyone who has insights that could help improve Forsler's support for forest management beyond Denmark, ?????????????????????????????????????????????????????!?

This International Sustainable Forestry Coalition 'nature' survey was inspired by the excellent reporting in Environmental Finance by Genevieve Redgrave and Peter Cripps. Time and again we read in EF the lament of major financial players that they are desperate for large scale nature and climate positive investment propositions, but hamstrung by a lack of consistent nature related data. With forest assets in 35 countries and a membership with top shelf environmental credentials, the ISFC is stepping up to try to help the sustainability world take a step forward. And this is just a start!
In an exclusive to EF, the International Sustainable Forestry Coalition has revealed that it is launching a new initiative to streamline definitions and metrics - all in a bid to scale up nature investing. The upcoming survey of forestry investors and companies will look at how nature is quantified across different countries and forest types. "If we can move even one step towards a more common lexicon it will be a leap forward for the creation of an investable natural capital asset class", said Olli Haltia Ross Hampton GAICD Read more: https://lnkd.in/enppRs-k

If it isn't obvious, I'm passionate about this space, and forestry has an important voice in shaping natural capital markets. ???? The International Sustainable Forestry Coalition's Nature Measures survey, featured in Environmental Finance, is a major step toward standardizing how we measure and report nature-related data across 35 countries and forest types. This work lays the foundation for making natural capital a truly investable asset class by bridging gaps in definitions, metrics, and KPIs. With forestry playing an increasing role in nature-positive finance, ISFC's leadership, Ross Hampton GAICD et al., is helping align our sector with evolving market expectations. If you work in this space and are considering how to integrate natural capital into financial strategies, this is a conversation worth having. A big thanks to Genevieve Redgrave for spotlighting this work. In the meantime, I'd love to hear your thoughts: How should we standardize natural capital accounting? #Forestry #NaturalCapital #NatureFinance #ISFC

?? State forest pine plantations in NSW produce enough timber to build 40,000 new homes a year ?? Forestry Corporation has managed state forest plantations in NSW for more than 100 years. ? The 230,000 hectares of pine plantations produce enough timber in an average year to build 40,000 new homes – this is equivalent to all the homes in Bathurst, Orange and Oberon in the Central West of NSW.? ? Chief Forester Duncan Watt explains how plantations are monitored to ensure high quality pine is produced. ? “Given our plantation crops are usually grown to around 30 years of age, understanding how they grow long-term is an essential part of the planning process,” Duncan said. ? “We’ve been managing a comprehensive network of Permanent Sample Plots (PSPs) for many decades.? ? “These plots are re-visited and measured every few years to provide data across the entire landscape that allows us to predict what our plantations will look like in the future.”? ? The Softwood Plantations Forest Resources team recently established five new PSPs in our Bombala plantation.? ? “The trees are marked up so they can be clearly identified and measured on the same part of the stem each time,” Duncan said.? ? David Booby, who is pictured here measuring the diameter of a pine tree, is a long-serving member of our forest inventory team. ? He has worked with Forestry Corporation for 36 years. ? The pine seedlings planted when he first started in the role are now of an age to be harvested for timber. ? Managing a sustainable forest resource for the future, we replant every tree that is harvested. ? ?? More than 10-million pine seedlings, grown from seed at our Tumut and Grafton nurseries, are planted in state forest pine plantations every year. ? Our dedicated staff, like Duncan and David, are leaving a legacy in timber for future generations. ?
