D-Day - 6 June 1944 - was the largest amphibious invasion in the history of warfare. The statistics of D-Day, codenamed Operation Overlord, are staggering. The Allies used over 5,000 ships and landing craft to land more than 150,000 troops on five beaches in Normandy. The landings marked the start of a long and costly campaign in north-west Europe, which ultimately convinced the German high command that defeat was inevitable. #DDay80 Here are 10 things you need to know about D-Day: https://lnkd.in/dH4rKfbW

Lest We Forget - D-Day 80 Years In the early hours of D-Day, 24,000 paratroopers and glider-borne troops landed behind German lines to provide tactical support. Massive naval and aerial bombardments attempted to supress the German defences and weaponry. Then a ground force of more than 130,000 troops came ashore on five beaches across a 50-mile stretch of Normandy coast, with the first waves often facing intact defences. By the end of D-Day there had been 10,000 allied casualties. Yet this was only the beginning. The ensuing Battle of Normandy was to last into August and cost tens of thousands of lives as it defeated and repulsed the occupying German forces eastwards. It was a decisive success for the Allies and paved the way for the liberation of much of north west Europe. https://okt.to/h2S5pl #dday #80years #lestweforget #rememberance #RememberingOurHeroes #RememberTheFallen #royalbritishlegion #thankyou

For the first time ever, see the Southwick House D Day Map up close as our interactive guide takes you on a step by step journey, from the early preparation right through to the final assault and the days after. Today marks the 80th anniversary of Operation Overlord, the Allied liberation of occupied Europe during the Second World War, which began on 6 June, 1944, commonly referred to as D-Day. Operation Neptune was the naval assault phase and involved safely landing 156,000 troops on 50 miles of defended coastline. The objective was clear - to transport and land Allied forces on the beaches of Normandy, France, to establish a foothold in Nazi-occupied Europe. Coordination of naval gunfire support, mine-sweeping operations, amphibious landings, and logistical support for the invasion would be crucial. The complex operation required years of meticulous planning and coordination among the Allied forces. https://bit.ly/3RaBBIj #DDAY #DDAY80 #DDayMap

The 3rd Infantry Division is modernizing and transforming for the future even as it rises to meet the demands of today, including to deter Russian aggression and reassure U.S. partners and allies. “While in Europe [between September 2023 and May 2024], our mission was to train alongside our allies and partners to develop a credible, interoperable force capable of countering any adversary,” Maj. Gen. Christopher Norrie, commander of the 3rd Infantry Division, said during a Sept. 20 media roundtable. “By building that strength and team cohesion with our allies and partners, we improved our own warfighting mastery to ensure that we're disciplined, resilient, lethal and ready to fight and win against global threats.” #ReadMore: https://loom.ly/tztgRYI #AUSAorg #AUSA #USArmy #globalthreats #europe #infantry

The "New" Euro-Atlantic Solidarity ?????????? “In order to protect itself — nationally, militarily, economically — the U.S. must remain a global power and invest in the capabilities it needs to protect its partners and itself. A failure of American resolve in Europe will only motivate aggression and threaten our prosperity across the globe. If Ukraine is allowed to fall, Washington will need a military that is larger, more capable, more responsive, and positioned in more locations. To deter or, if necessary, defeat Russia, the U.S. armed forces would need 14 new brigade combat teams, 18 more battle force ships, eight additional Marine Corps infantry battalions, 555 more Air Force aircraft, and 266,000 more uniform personnel for the increased force structure”. The Royal Australian Navy has achieved a significant milestone by successfully integrating enhanced lethality strike capabilities into its surface combatant fleet. During Exercise RIMPAC 2024, the Hobart-class destroyer HMAS Sydney conducted a successful firing of the Naval Strike Missile (NSM), marking the replacement of the ageing Harpoon weapon system. Australian Minister for Defence Industry, Pat Conroy, praised the collaboration between Defence and Kongsberg Defence Australia, alongside local Australian companies such as Marand, Aerobond, Australian Precision Technologies, Nupress Group, Axiom Precision Manufacturing, and Stahl Metall. He emphasized the Australian Government’s commitment to accelerating the integration of enhanced lethality capabilities. “The National Defence Strategy’s strategy of denial aims to prevent any adversary from coercing Australia through force while supporting regional security and prosperity,” said Conroy. “This successful firing exemplifies our collaboration with international partners and Australian industry to deliver new capabilities that promote regional stability. The Naval Strike Missile’s introduction enables our Navy’s surface ships to conduct long-range maritime strikes, increasing the capability and lethality of our Navy.” Find out more: https://lnkd.in/dNb4rUKt #RAN #Australia #navy #Kongsberg #NSM #naval #missile #defence #industry #military #technology #armedforces

80 years ago, unprecedented coordination between Allied nations, and the intensive planning of engineers, meteorologists, logisticians and countless more, led to a force from 13 countries approaching Normandy in a 5000-vessel armada. ?
