As part of a fun (and nerdy!) personal project, I was introduced to the work of Social Finance. I was totally intrigued by their Career Impact Bonds concept, and asked Jess Brooks: can this be done with climate work? She said yes and "we're doing it"--hooray! I love how the project allows people to get the green jobs that we need today and will need much much more of tomorrow. And the money recycles! ?? ? We can't recycle plastic, but we sure as hell can recycle money! #workforcedevelopment #climatesolutions

Continuing our discussion beyond just the first pillar, Mitigation-Focused (Building), to achieve climate goals, looking into fostering resilience-focused (people) initiatives is also key. Let's delve into one of the key areas of focus for this pillar. Culture, Equity, and Justice Goals: Education serves as a cornerstone for advancing climate knowledge among young people and communities. Through schools and grassroots advocacy, we can empower future generations with the knowledge and tools needed to address climate challenges effectively. Benefits to disadvantaged communities are also integral to our resilience efforts. Engaging with marginalized communities and amplifying their voices regarding sustainable development projects is crucial. We must advocate for equitable access to renewable energy, public health services, and other benefits of sustainable development to ensure no one is left behind. Let's champion culture, equity, and justice in our resilience efforts, striving for a future where all communities thrive. #ClimateResilience #Equity #Justice #ClimateEducation

Today, on World Cities Day, we celebrate the theme "Youth Climate Changemakers: Catalyzing Local Action for Urban Sustainability." The theme underlines the essential role of young people and local governments in tackling the climate challenges urban areas face, as cities are projected to house 70% of the world's population by 2050. With young people under 18 making up a significant portion of urban populations, especially in the Global South, their voices are critical in creating inclusive, sustainable cities. At the Parliamentary Forum on Small Arms and Light Weapons, we believe that empowering youth goes beyond climate action alone. Young people in urban areas are also disproportionately affected by the negative implications of Small Arms and Light Weapons (SALW)-related violence. The United Nations Security Council Resolution 2250 (UNSCR 2250) and subsequent resolutions on Youth, Peace and Security affirms that the active participation of youth is crucial for the successful efforts to reduce and prevent violence and conflict. Yet traditionally, young people have been seen as either victims or perpetrators of violence, to the detriment of recognising their active role and potential as peace-builders. As cities grow and evolve, it’s imperative to engage youth in decision-making processes not only around climate but also around conflict prevention. Youth’s participation is essential to shaping urban environments that are peaceful and, sustainable. By facilitating an enabling environment for the meaningful participation of youth in efforts to prevent and reduce armed violence, and by fostering dialogue with parliamentarians and supporting young stakeholders and lawmakers, including young women, young people can bring their ideas into discussions on both climate action and peacebuilding. Investing in youth for a more sustainable future ensures cities that meet the diverse needs of all inhabitants, both today and tomorrow. Learn more here: https://lnkd.in/d-3CH5Q?

Just transition to climate resilient communities "requires a scalable, yet standardized method to accelerate economic transitions one place at a time."* At Trees-as-Infrastructure, we are seeding a corresponding Community of Practice to evolve Public-Private-Commons partnerships that intensify care and accelerate novel financing approaches to maintain nature as critical and investable urban infrastructure: Along technical guidelines we define high-quality project development for urban nature-based solutions to vitalize financing opportunities in such. As the dust settles from the recent election, we are thinking a lot about our need for belonging. We are social animals. The desire to belong and feel like you are part of a community is a basic human need. Decades of research on human behavior has shown that our actions are heavily influenced by conversations with friends, neighbors and others we trust in our local communities. Social connections and social norms affect our decisions about many things – the clothes we wear, the cars we drive, the homes we want, and the politicians we support. We can use these insights to maintain forward progress on climate in the next four years. We, the people, have the power to create significant emissions reductions through our own actions and our local advocacy. About 60% of US annual emissions come from the fuel we burn to heat our homes and buildings and to power our vehicles. Technology is on the market today to eliminate most of these emissions (e.g solar panels, heat pumps, electric vehicles); it is up to individuals and local governments to pursue these upgrades and to provide support and resources so that everyone can make the transition to clean energy. Now is the time to double down on community-led climate action. Thousands of local governments and community-based organizations are willing to do more; the Clean Energy Communities Fund (CECF)'s collaborator network includes organizations working in all 50 states, with over 25,000 local communities, local partnerships and local chapters. But local organizations need capacity and funding to get started with engaging residents and updating local policies and permitting rules. By working together, neighbor-to-neighbor to get fossil fuels out of our homes, vehicles and communities, we can build hope, agency and belonging. We can create a healthier, more equitable and sustainable future. We, the people, have the power to create a better future. We don’t need to wait for politicians. We just need to remember where our power comes from - from relationships, from local communities and social connections, from a sense of belonging and support for one another. Thousands of communities and millions of individuals working together can create an unstoppable force for progress. Join us: www.cecfund.org Onward! The decarbonisation debate: exploring climate action for equitable cities This online event organized by the International Institute for Environment and Development (IIED) on 24 June will explore opportunities for climate change mitigation policies and practices to respond to poverty and support social justice in cities and the agendas of urban social movements.Drawing on examples shared in the new issue of the Environment and Urbanization journal, we will debate the role of decarbonisation in the efforts to achieve urban social justice and climate-resilient development. What makes low-income and informal communities legitimate sites for decarbonisation? How can low-carbon infrastructural initiatives align with adaptation priorities? And how would decarbonisation efforts accelerate social justice in low- and middle-income cities? Register: https://lnkd.in/ecedWbhv #ClimateAction4Cities
