Today our band, Dance at Your Own Risk, performed at Northeast Bank's free community picnic at the Emma B. Howe YMCA. Annie sang the song, "YMCA" which went over very well being the event was held at the YMCA. Cole sang an original song about his dog called "Lake George." Thank you Northeast Bank for inviting us to perform at your picnic. You can listen to the song "Lake George" on YouTube here: https://lnkd.in/ga3Jvxx9 #houseband #picnic #ymca #northeastbank #disabilityservices #achieveservices

So this is happening this evening: https://lnkd.in/gBHizA7J It’s a “Dances with the Stars” format fund-raiser to eradicate homelessness in Seattle. I’m going to post about this on two levels. Let’s start with the principle. Seattle is a city of immense wealth. A veritable Gold Rush Town, both literally and figuratively. The most recent gold rush here has been technology, but it’s never been episodic. There’s something about this place that offers opportunity, and helps one attain goals they never felt were open to them. I’m a fortunate recipient of such opportunity. Through the support, generosity, and love of my closest friends, my partners, my family, and those I serve, I’m blessed to have gotten to places I never thought possible. And yet, people get left behind. The very things that drive equity one day stand to block it thereafter. Take housing in Seattle. As opportunity peaks, rising prices, increasing density, and an infrastructure that was not meant to support this level of growth has left our vulnerable behind. And it continues to get worse. In a place that is home to Microsoft, Starbucks, Amazon, Boeing, Costco - how is it possible that we have those who lack safety, belonging, and above all, are forced to compromise their dignity? Education, Community, and Purpose are three pillars of equity, and helping those without a roof over their heads find safety and community is Plymouth Housing’s mission. (That’s my interpretation, not theirs so if I offended anyone with my lack of polish in wordsmithing, it’s on me.) This event is a fund-raiser that many of my friends and several of the companies I mentioned support. And it’s to give back to the community. To help level the playing field for those less fortunate. And yes, it’s also to bring us all together to celebrate our being in the fortunate position to be able to contemplate helping others. And kudos to those who have donated their time and resources in making it possible. Now on to the second level. I’m participating as a performer in this event. Bollywood dancing. Nope, I’ve never done it before, and my Hindi is atrocious. To say I am terrified doesn’t do it justice. I was severely mocked growing up as a kid for my absolutely terrible lack of coordination, including in dance (I know, “boo-hoo for the bullied kid”, right - but even old wounds are painful at the time). Much of this was also because I lost my community in 8th grade when we moved between countries. So let me be clear: I am not a technically sound dancer. I lack coordination, awareness, and grace. But I’ve got rhythm and spirit, and I’m coachable and work really hard. So I’m going to put it out there. Tune into this livestream tonight at 7pm Pacific to see whether Eshita Jayaswal has been able to turn me into a performer who can help his community by leaping out of his comfort zone (and dropping some baggage along the way). Thanks all for reading. And let’s see where this goes.

?? Join Us and London Business Leaders in the Fight Against Homelessness - CEO Sleepout Nov 25th - Lords Cricket Ground. I’m thrilled to share that since our last post, two incredible business leaders have already joined the Providence Row “CEOs For Change” team for the CEO Sleepout UK London. ?? We still need 18 more leaders to reach our goal of 20 participants. On the 25th of November, we’ll come together for one night at the iconic Lord’s Cricket Ground, raising vital funds and awareness to combat homelessness in our capital. This isn’t just an event—it’s a powerful statement from the business community that we stand united for equality and lasting change. ?? Homelessness in London is at record levels, and the situation is worsening. The prison release scheme will only add extra pressure to already stretched services and the ability to provide assistance and safe spaces to those that need it most. This winter, more people than ever will face the harsh reality of living on the streets or in temporary accommodation, putting immense pressure on charities like Providence Row. It doesn’t have to be this way. With your support, we can turn the tide. Together, we can not only provide immediate relief but also help build long-term solutions that offer a route out of homelessness—and keep people off the streets for good. Are you a business leader ready to stand with us? Let’s show that London’s business community is a force for change. ?? Sign up today: Email Michael Blakesley to confirm and start registration [email protected] Let’s make an impact together. ?? #CEOSleepout #CEOsForChange #Homelessness #Equality #London #csr #businessleaders #leadership #businesscommunity

HOPE is Homeless. Hope is an unexpected hand for a stranger. Home is not just a roof, home is a place where you feel comfortable and secure. Once you help yourself you can help others. Help is growing. To get out one person of the streets in 6-12 months, it gets 30 people to meet one hour/week to stranger that they don’t know. Some people get out of the streets because of the government helps, but they need a job. Is where #HomelessEntrepreneur is focus. Is not just putting a roof over their heads, is about giving them the #opportunity of being active citizens, turning availabilities into assets, turning donations into deposits, that they may give back to other people to get off the streets. Housing first is a great way to be able to focus on their lives, but they need a job. 35% of the them are #homeless because the lost their jobs. #Hope is working, getting off the streets and being able to get involved in the society. Talent can change our/their lives. Yesterday our friend Andrew Funk started #thegreatwalk. A Fundraising Campaign to raise awareness & end global homelessness. “The Great Walk,” is a 150 km walk to give a voice and presence to the 150 million homeless individuals worldwide: Every kilometer they walk represents 1 million people made of potential experiencing homelessness. The upcoming Great Walk will culminate in a sleep out, coinciding with the XXXIII Olympic Summer Games in Paris, France. Their aim is to inspire individuals affected by homelessness and their future support network through their commitment to ending homelessness, so they can connect the two groups faster and ultimately speed up the process of ending their state of homelessness. Hope is an unexpected hand for a stranger. https://lnkd.in/dcFqykU2

In today's fast-paced and often isolating world, it's easy to feel disconnected from those around us. But community is more than just a nice-to-have - it's a vital necessity for our well-being and happiness. In recent times, we've faced unprecedented challenges such as the COVID-19 pandemic, economic uncertainty, and social isolation. Amidst these challenges, it's more important than ever to have a strong sense of community to turn to. Community provides us with a sense of belonging, support and connection. It gives us a platform to share our experiences, learn from others, and find comfort in times of need. When we're part of a community, we feel seen, heard, and valued. Moreover, community has the power to bring people together, foster empathy and understanding, and create positive change in our lives and the world around us. So let's prioritise community building and nurturing the connections that make us stronger. Let's come together, support each other, and build a brighter future for all. Join us in celebrating the importance of community and let's make a difference!
The Newtown Community Association serves the extended community around Belmont Park, Newtown in Exeter. They aim to connect with people in Exeter and surrounding areas through events and activities. I admire Catherine Furness for creating my community’s third place. When I moved into my current neighbourhood back in 2018, I threw myself into community building through our residents association. I took on a leadership role, organizing clean-ups, garden tours, summer parties, and community meetings. Fast forward to 2024, I am now a dad to an incredible toddler. Every day, he wants to go to the playground up the street to ride the slide and see his toddler buddies. Despite living here for years, it was only recently that I became curious about the park's name and its origins. I discovered that the park exists because Catherine Furness donated her home and land to the city of Halifax in perpetuity. She didn't leave it to family, sell it, or rent it out; she donated it to enhance the quality of life for her community for generations to come. What a hero. Because of this park, I know dozens of neighbors and their kids. We invite each other to barbecues and birthday parties. Our lives are insurmountably richer because of her generosity. A third place is a space outside of home or office where you see familiar faces repeatedly. This consistent familiarity breeds deeper bonds and relationships. As we build LAUFT, we think about the concept of the third space and what it means for people. How can we make people feel more welcome? How can we break down barriers? How do we help people connect? Catherine Furness is a huge inspiration to me and continues to influence my work in creating a new kind of third place for people with the freedom to work from anywhere. #MakeSmartWork #WorkFromAnywhere #DistributedWork #RemoteWork #HybridWork #RTO #Community #ThirdPlace
