It takes time, energy and commitment to learn to love yourself and be confident in who you are when you have a disability. And that’s not because it’s a bad thing to be disabled, it’s not! It’s because the entire world constantly pity’s you, looks at you with funny faces, asks invasive questions. Or even worse, they tell you that they care about you and your needs but then consistently refuse to be accessible and accommodating. And, no one talks about how hard it is to learn to love yourself after diagnosis, to learn to love a new reality that you didn’t ask for, to learn to love a body/mind that used to be function typically. There’s a significant lack of professional support to help people with disabilities through the trauma that we face. This is why I became a Disability Life Coach, and it’s why I created Confidently Disabled- my group coaching program. Confidently Disabled is a program where people with disabilities can work through their trauma, build true self confidence and learn to set and hold healthy boundaries. And more importantly, you do it surrounded by a community of like-minded disabled people who are committed to self growth and actualizing their goals. The program is re-launching after a little summer hiatus on September 16th, and we already have an amazing group signed up and ready to live confidently with their disabilities. Here is a blurb about my new book 'My Body Safety Rules: educating and empowering children with disability about body boundaries, consent and body safety skills' This book aims to teach children with disability about body safety and consent and provide them with essential skills to recognize unsafe situations. Using age-appropriate language and illustrations, this book addresses the needs and challenges often faced by children with disability, helping them to understand their rights in regard to their body and personal space. ‘My Body Safety Rules’ serves two purposes: 1.????The first is to educate children with disability in body safety and consent and what they can expect from the people who interact with them 2.????The second is to educate family, caregivers, teachers and healthcare professionals in the concepts of body safety and the language of consent, and how they need to respect the child's rights especially in regard to their body. This book may be read over a number of sittings, depending on the child's needs. Please take the time to discuss each rule, the illustrations and engage the child in the questions provided. Each child's disability is unique. DC Individual and Family Support (IFS) Waiver The DC Individual and Family Support (IFS) Waiver, operated by the Department on Disability Services, provides a range of services to District residents with intellectual and developmental disabilities (IDD) who live independently or with family/friends and meet Medicaid eligibility requirements. Services include assistive technology, behavioral supports, employment readiness, and more. The waiver excludes residential supports and imposes a $75,000 annual cap on services per individual.
