Wilderness Medicine Wednesday: I joined the Wilderness Medical Society as, incredible as it is to me now, and EMT-B. Membership for me back then, even as a non-doctoral member, was pretty steep. But I had discovered this intersection of my nascent medical career and passion for rock climbing and a beginning Search and Rescue career, and it seemed the perfect fit. I read every article in the Journal, understanding probably less than half of what I read (and even today medical statistics and research modeling isn’t exactly my passion). I wish I could say the today - about reading every article, not the comprehension. The first WMS conference I attended is somewhat lost in the midst of time, but I believe it was the summer 2005 conference in Snowmass - just a month before I was to start my PA program. Since then I’ve attended summer conferences, winter conferences, dive medicine conferences, and been involved in planning and teaching two heat and desert medicine courses in Tucson, Arizona. Now in Africa, attending WMS conferences has gotten difficult (and expensive) and it’s been seven years since I have been in person. However I am very excited that this year they have a live remote option (fully robust from previous years) and the option to also go back and watch the lectures at your leisure. The speaker line up is pretty impressive, and I’m looking forward to it.? #wildernessmedicine #wildernessmedicalsociety #paramedic #prehospital #remotemedicine https://lnkd.in/evP9MUyj

Long time no see! I'm currently on the long interview road to residency; I've also been finishing up some projects and wanted to share a couple of them. I recently had a piece I wrote on hospice volunteering published in Baylor College of Medicine's "Omentum", an annual medical arts & literature publication. If you know me, you know the hospice experience is something near and dear to my heart. Find "W.T.D." in Vol. 4 here: https://lnkd.in/dPc2QWYX As part of my medical school's Global Health track, I recently completed & presented a scholarly paper on one of my favorite topics: Emerging zoonotic viruses (and the epidemiologic approaches to address them). Events like the SARS-CoV-2 pandemic have brought a lot of much-needed attention to the issue. Paper and presentation here: https://lnkd.in/dXqC3VPK

Share your work at the 17th Annual Science of D&I Conference! This year's theme "Moving Fast and Slow: Optimizing the Pace of Implementation" will address the underexplored concept of the pace of D&I. The D&I science community has known for decades that it takes too long for too little of evidence-based care to reach everyone who could benefit. Much energy has been spent on the second part of the equation—can we increase the volume of evidence-based care delivered—with less attention to the optimal pace at which this should happen. In the seventeenth year of the D&I Conference, we will explore methodological advancements, challenges and opportunities to understanding how to investigate and optimize implementation pace across health care, and community and public health systems. In 2022, NBME launched a Creative Community focused on enhancing the assessment of clinical reasoning using school-based Objective Structured Clinical Examinations (OSCEs). Through collaboration, the OSCE for Clinical Reasoning Creative Community members?explored new approaches to assessing clinical reasoning. ??Drawing on the expertise of NBME staff, faculty educators and students, the Community developed a novel case format to assess the behaviors of Hypothesis-Driven Information Gathering, the iterative ability to generate and refine hypotheses based on gathered information, then use those hypotheses to direct subsequent information gathering. ??Discover more insights from the Creative Community members and how the experience informed their own approaches to teaching and assessment: https://lnkd.in/gyBbWQwR.

At the ISTSS Annual Meeting last week, CTRJJ faculty Dr. Keith Cruise, Dr. Julian Ford, and Dr. Carly Baetz, J.D., Ph.D. coauthored the symposium presentation, "Trauma Screening and Assessment with Adolescents Experiencing Systems Involvement: Challenges and Opportunities in Supporting Adolescents Identified as Polyvictims." Overall, symposium presentations underscored the importance of evidence-informed systematic assessment of the current and past trauma exposures of system-involved youth on an ongoing basis with the evidence from multiple informants included whenever possible. This is “just” good trauma-informed practice, but these research findings provide a crucial empirical grounding for practice guidelines that are specific, practical, and actionable.
