Last week, the leadership team from Lhoist visited our Wichita campus and gave our children a fun lesson in mining (and treated them to a Chick-fil-A lunch)! Lhoist is a family-owned minerals and lime producer that gives back by not only restoring the natural site but enhancing it. To start, kids were given “money” to buy supplies, tools to mine, as well as to purchase their “mine,” which was a cookie made with frosting, coconut flakes, M&Ms, sprinkles and chocolate chips. Kids mined for chocolate chips by carefully removing the topsoil (coconut), sediment (sprinkles), and mud (frosting). Lhoist helped the kids calculate profits and losses and compared their predictions with their actual discoveries. In true Lhoist fashion, they then had to restore the area in which they mined. Everyone ?????? this educational, delicious learning experience! Thank you, Lhoist!
