In the years that Lensational has been working with women in different countries across the globe one of the biggest questions we’ve been trying to answer is what next? What happens to these new talents that result from our training programs? We understand that penetrating the photography industry, particularly as novice photographers and especially as women who face marginalization, can be tough due to multiple barriers. The #EmpowerHerLens collective fund is an initiative born out of the need to address this concern, with the aim of mobilizing financial support from individuals and organizations. This support is then made accessible to our network of photographers, enabling them to pursue personal projects that contribute to building a pool of knowledge on the important issues their communities face, while also receiving technical support to grow their skills. While this was still an idea in development, we saw its potential over the past year as friends with privately owned businesses contributed to the initiative, and partners like NAP Global Network supported the commissioning of some of our photographers. When 500 women over 50 posed for Ponch Hawkes’ 500 Strong project, they weren’t just stepping in front of a camera—they were stepping into a movement. A movement that says: aging is not invisibility, vulnerability is strength, and beauty is about authenticity, not perfection. Hearing the stories behind this project is both heart-wrenching and inspiring. Women who hadn’t revealed their bodies to their own partners for decades found courage in this shared experience. Some arrived with props of deep personal significance—a chandelier, carpentry tools, even a bucket of seaweed—reminding us how personal symbols can tell the most universal stories. What strikes me most is how the project created solidarity among strangers. It’s a testament to the power of collective courage. When we see ourselves reflected in others, we realize we’re not alone—and perhaps that’s where the real transformation begins.
