@organicgrownco (OGC) was founded in 1978 by a group of gardeners, small-scale farmers, hippies and environmental activists with a shared vision to expand the availability of and demand for organic produce. Since their inception, OGC has become one of the Northwest’s largest independent distributors of fresh, organic produce. They’ve also prioritized progressive business models, most recently becoming a Sustainable Food & Agriculture Perpetual Purpose Trust in 2018. OGC’s Organic is the Answer campaign serves as an online hub providing science-supported facts and resources designed to help people navigate the complexities of food certifications and labeling. OGC was recently named Organic Company of the Year at “An Organic Night Out” hosted by The Organic Center and Organic Voices. The demand for organic-certified products has spilled over into the beverage sector, with complex implications for the wine industry. The soil content, air quality, and water pH are paramount to a wine’s final flavor, which implementing organic farming practices could disrupt. Is consumer behavior enough to create transformation in agriculture? ?? ?? Consumers have spoken; they want organic foods. And we often hear, "vote with your dollar." But how do we know what impact, if any, it makes on the farm? Adoption of farmland under organic products has increased slightly over the years. But the importing of organic foods has well outpaced domestic adoption in America. Despite organic farming often being more profitable than conventional. So, why isn't more than 1% of acres transitioned to organic despite strong market signals? Transitioning to organic takes three years, a period ripe with risk, both financially and agronomically. Soils take time to rejuvenate, and farmers cannot access organic premiums while weaning off conventional inputs and existing weed and pest pressures. There are few safety nets for farmers when transitioning to organic farming. But what if a fraction of every food dollar spent could fuel farmers to adopt regenerative practices while easing the risk of transitioning to certified organic? With total food and beverage sales in the United States reaching $2.3 trillion in 2023, imagine if 1% was set aside to fund regeneration. Zero Foodprint is rallying the food and beverage industry to do just that. They are paving the way for a collective model for regeneration. One where every single eater can truly be part of the solution. By teaming up with restaurants, grocery stores, and food service businesses, consumers and businesses contribute small percentages (1%) of food sales to fund farmers wanting to practice regenerative agriculture. To date, they have awarded $2.4 million to farmers to implement regenerative practices. And they just opened up applications for their next round of grant funding. If you know any farmers in California, Colorado, Oregon, and Washington who want to implement regenerative practices on their farms, have them apply! (see comments) Change in consumer behavior is important, but it often isn’t 1:1. The solution may not be simply changing what we eat. We want to give a shout out to the participants in the Transition to Organic Partnership Program (TOPP). For the past few National Organic Standards Board meetings, participants from the nearest TOPP regions have talked about their successes and challenges. Several NOSB members mentioned that they really appreciate this information and a chance to hear more about what’s happening on farms and with farmers who are interested in shifting to organic production. Staff from the organizations participating in TOPP met concurrently to the NOSB meeting, and we popped in for?a moment and snapped a picture—what a delightful, and dedicated, group. Check below for a link to more information about TOPP—if you know a farmer who has been waffling about switching to organic agriculture or who could benefit from some technical help to solve a sticky problem, please let them know about this program. And, if you are a farmer with expertise to share, there are paid mentorships available. Our founder Bill Wolf said recently and in public comment that our ratio of US organic production to organic sales has got to increase dramatically. TOPP is one way to help make that happen, as are the market development grants from USDA (and the proposed standards for mushrooms and pet foods—comment by May 10).
