Selling Dirt: A Legacy in My Blood My great-grandfather, born in 1912, was an entrepreneur at heart and always looked for ways to provide for his family. After years of grinding, he eventually bought a dump truck and started selling dirt. Over time, he managed to buy a few small rental houses. They were simple and modest, but he kept them 100% occupied. When I was five, he started taking me with him on Saturday mornings at 6:30 a.m. to collect rent. “That’s when you know they’re home”, he would say in Spanish. He’d honk the horn, and I’d get out and knock on doors. If no one answered, we’d wait. They always came to the door eventually. When I graduated high school, I planned to be an attorney and run for office. I never realized that real estate—and selling dirt—was already in my blood. Today, as a Commercial Real Estate Broker, I use the lessons he taught me about hard work, persistence, and managing property every day. Do everything with enthusiasm and approach each opportunity with gratitude. The experience and lessons you’re gaining today could be exactly what you need to succeed in the future. What’s the biggest risk you ever took? To be honest when I think back to 2011 when we started this business, it makes me kind of uncomfortable. But at the time, I knew with every part of me that this was it. That failure wasn’t an option and that it was going to work. The thing about taking a risk like that when I started this business is that knowing I had to borrow from friends and family was a big part of why failure was not an option. There was no way I was going to let them down. It was the best motivation I could have possibly had.
