This was one of the first eye-opening perspective shifts of my behavior analysis journey over a decade ago ??
It is an education I wish I’d had before I was a parent because learning from the regular parenting books seemed to make everything worse for us. We had no idea what PDA was at the time ??
By following my parental observations and then learning the science of human behavior (as an anti-ABAer myself), I learned exactly what punishment is; what makes something punitive vs. punishing vs. teaching. Once we see these clearly, we can’t unsee how most of us grew up with parenting and teaching methods based on punishment.
Today’s ABA is so different! We listen to children and families to learn from them as the experts way before we attempt to teach anything, and when we do teach skills, it’s broken down into incremental baby steps, empathetic, trauma-assumed, assent-based, child-led, and never through punitive measures ???????
Additionally, we do integrate trauma-informed Polyvagal and brain states into the Montessori approach as well.
