New year, new beginnings as they say. This is the time when all things are bright and fresh, and 1,001 resolutions are made. How many make it through the first week, first month, first quarter? Creating that stickiness requires one thing, and one thing only - Will! That strong desire to see a difference and make the change. How do we light that fire and keep it going? Small baby steps. That's what I'll aim for. Not the big ambitious resolutions. Take small, achievable steps and soon you'll realise that you've already walked quite a mile or two towards that big resolution regardless if it's work or life. This post is the first step. I’ll never forget my first day at Lifeway. I was, of course, working remotely from home. My day consisted of several zoom meetings for new employee orientation and then a meeting with my new HR team and leaders. The whole day I sat laser focused. I didn’t take a lunch break, I instead used that time to familiarize myself with the employee handbook. I didn’t take a bathroom break, I used that time to stay on zoom and try to talk to the other new hires. And I certainly didn’t move a muscle when, during my meeting with my new team, I watched my then 2 year old strut his way into the kitchen, grab the hose from the sink and proceed to flood our entire kitchen floor. I’d love to say all of this is because I’m just THAT composed and on my game… but really, it was completely out of fear. I had been in companies where doing the opposite of any of these things would have been seen as a weakness or an inability to focus on the “right” task. I had a leader from a different company once tell me “a good employee is effective at their job and exceptional at home… but a great employee is exceptional at their job and effective at home.” Today my manager said “you just have to look at your tasks for the day and prioritize what’s most important and sometimes that may look like taking your son to the park.” WOW. It took quite a while for me to deconstruct that mindset and actually believe a company could truly value my family and my wellbeing/mental health. Lifeway has worked tirelessly to build a culture that has completely changed the way I see my work. I don’t have to do this, I get to do this and I get to help bring others alongside of me and watched them, like me, slowly unfold and eventually bloom. Why? Because when you get to be authentic alongside of people who see you as fearfully and wonderfully made, there’s no going back. ?? #talentacquisition #TA #recruiting #HR #humanresources #culture #christian
