I had the privilege of moderating a transformative session that explored how young leaders can drive systemic change for a sustainable and thriving planet. Led by the inspiring Nolita Thina Mvunelo from the Club of Rome, the discussion was packed with powerful ideas and actionable strategies. Key Takeaways: Systems Thinking: Adopting a holistic view to tackle interconnected challenges like development and ecological sustainability. Youth Leadership: With over 50% of the population under 30, young voices are critical in shaping a sustainable future. Embracing Complexity: Effective problem-solving requires understanding power dynamics, scale, and nuance. Community and Solidarity: Building networks of shared values and principles can catalyze collective action. Principles for Change: Embrace Complexity: Recognize the interconnected nature of global challenges. Dance with Scale: Balance micro-level actions and macro-level policies for impactful results. Understand Power Dynamics: Address systemic barriers to create equitable solutions. The session concluded with a call to action for young people to reflect on their values, engage in community building, and pursue regenerative practices that restore both ecosystems and communities. The importance of local leaders in building thriving communities with secure local economies is increasingly important. In today’s fast-paced world, and one that often feels less stable and less predictable than ever, the role of local leaders has never been more crucial. As we navigate challenges like economic uncertainty, social fragmentation, and environmental issues, the importance of strong, visionary leadership at the community level is rising. Local leaders play a pivotal role in creating successful, sustainable, and secure and thriving communities with dependable local economies. Local leaders are the backbone of our communities. They consistently work to understand the unique needs, strengths, and challenges that exist within their neighborhoods. The League’s Local Economies initiative explores entrepreneurship and small business support systems in southeast Michigan with the goal of helping municipalities and their communities create more equitable small business ecosystems. In particular, this work focuses on the category of “microbusinesses,” those with no more than ten employees (and often none), which make up the majority of local economies. #LocalLeadership #ThrivingCommunities #CommunityDevelopment #Sustainability #ResilientEconomies #Collaboration #MichiganMunicipalLeague #MMLFoundation https://lnkd.in/gzz6ndeJ.

Imagine if 100 young leaders in your community... Each got training on how to think like futurists, And applied their training to your community, And prioritized the no-BS things your community has to change to be better in the future... Then what? - It would revolutionize the conversations your community has about its future - It would change the qualifications and character required by elected leaders - It would rebalance your community's priorities, from the here-and-now to the now-and-next This isn't a thought experiment. It's happening now in the Quad Cities: https://lnkd.in/epxdgw-N

Reflecting on this “oldie but goodie” Stanford Social Innovation Review article on systems leadership and so much of it still resonates almost 10 years on. The three core capabilities paraphrased below stand out as critical to stewarding better futures: ?? 1. Allowing curiosity to help you find perspectives that reveal the larger system ? 2. Pausing, reflecting and deepening that reflection by inviting others into it ?? 3. Co-creating futures rather than constantly prosecuting the spaghetti-like mess of the current state The Good Cartel Collective offers a co-working day each month to grow your systems leadership skills with peers by tapping into new perspectives, reflecting, and imagining better futures together. You can book for our next gathering in Collingwood on 2 August here: https://lnkd.in/gabKxZNk. Article: Senge, P., Hamilton, H., & Kania, J. (2014). The Dawn of System Leadership. Social cohesion is crucial for the stability and prosperity of communities, regions, and nations. It shapes how societies respond to challenges and enhances their resilience in overcoming them. On 1 July 2024, RSIS launched the Social Cohesion Research Programme (SCRP). The new Programme is dedicated to examining social cohesion with the view to advancing policy-oriented research, forging strategic partnerships, and developing leadership to inspire cohesive and resilient societies. Beyond research, SCRP enriches the discourse on social cohesion through public platforms like the International Conference on Cohesive Societies (ICCS), leadership programmes, and strategic collaborations with scholars, civic leaders, and faith-based practitioners. These initiatives foster inclusive dialogue among stakeholders from diverse backgrounds, promoting mutual understanding, trust, and cohesion.
