Professional Care Worker Week. I echo these sentiments wholeheartedly. We will support the week and celebrate the huge contribution our colleagues in the sector make. Over the last 20 odd years, and especially through austerity and then Covid, the care sector has changed beyond recognition and professionalised so much. During austerity it became increasingly challenging, and during Covid we then saw a scale of commitment, dedication and selflessness, that was even beyond what we knew already existed, in abundance. Post Covid we have seen yet another phase of continued austerity. The emotional, technical, and to a lesser extent, the physical demands have significantly expanded the role, and the skill it demands, beyond recognition, which is in part, why can be challenging to find the incredibly special people we need, with such large hearts and who give so much. This also explains why continuing training has become such a huge part of social care. We are incredibly grateful and humbled by the immense contribution of the workforce and they are indeed truly professional in every possible way.

Accessing care after hours is an increasing concern for Australians who work for themselves, travel long distances to work or juggle the needs of family spread across parents and children and who need affordable care. Of concern to the system is the growth in the number of Australians who only use after hours services to access primary care. Yesterday the Hon Minister for Health and Aged Care released the Review of After Hours Primary Care Programs and Policy. This was a challenging piece of work to be involved with as the solutions are not simple. With current expenditure on after hours support programs to general practice tallying $689M per year the result is patchy at best and does little to support continuity of care. Using Health Direct to improve navigation around after hours options, triage patients and ensure coordination of information flows would result in a better system. Building a consistent urgent care response will require further alignment of the multiple players in the system and considerably more consultation. To ensure general practice continues to offer services additional incentives by way of changes to the MBS are required. Such changes need to reflect the real costs of delivering care in anti-social hours. Patients without a regular GP also need to be connected to ongoing care via new initiatives. The report highlights the considerable work to be done and the timeframes for implementation. We all have a stake in the change ahead. https://lnkd.in/gzdjX4Ws
