Human rights are the oxygen of humanity. But one by one, they are being suffocated. Human rights are on the ropes and being pummeled hard. This represents a direct threat to all of the hard-won mechanisms and systems established over the last 80 years to protect and advance human rights. But as the recently adopted Pact for the Future reminds us, human rights are, in fact, a source of solutions. The Pact provides a playbook on how we can win the fight for human rights: through peace, development, the rule of law, climate action, and better governance of technology. We can help end the suffocation of human rights by breathing life into the Pact for the Future. Let’s do it together. We don’t have a moment to lose.
The UN ought to be the bastion of protecting human rights, yet history shows a troubling pattern: when abuses stem from or are supported by the powerful empires of old and new, the UN has too often failed to act decisively. The mechanisms meant to safeguard human rights have repeatedly been compromised by the interests of the few, leaving the many to suffer. If the UN is serious about breathing life into the Pact for the Future, it must first transform itself—shifting from an instrument that enables the powerful to one that truly represents and defends the voices of the marginalised.
Human rights are gasping for air, suffocated by silence, weighed down by power and politics. But they are not lost—so long as we refuse to let them fade. Justice is not given; it is fought for. Dignity is not granted; it is claimed. Freedom is not a promise; it is a pulse—beating only when we make it our mission to protect it. The Pact for the Future is more than words; it is a breath of life. And there is no alternative to the UN—flawed, challenged, but still the world’s best hope. When human rights die, so does humanity. And we will not let that happen???????

António, the metaphor of oxygen is incomplete. If human rights are truly the oxygen of humanity, we need to understand that, just like in breathing, it's not enough to simply inhale (maintain fundamental rights). We also need exhalation — the constant process of questioning, adapting, and renewing those rights so that the social system doesn't suffocate. Talking about the "Pact for the Future" as the sole solution, without addressing the dynamic cycle between rights and emerging challenges, keeps us under the illusion that we are breathing freely, when in reality, we may be swallowing water without even realizing it. It's not just about preserving rights, but about allowing their evolution through active participation, deliberation, and transparency, so that instead of suffocating, we can expand true adaptability and equity within the system.

Mr. Guterres must ask the international community to propose tangible actions to be taken for Human Rights Violations and War Crimes occurring around the world. For example, almost 75% of the nation can collectively tell Israel to stop human rights violations. It is time to stop or there will be military intervention in the Middle East from the international community to ensure Justice is served to the oppressed people of the world. The role of China, Russia, South Africa, Brazil, and Malaysia is equally crucial. Arab nations and USA-UK-Germany cannot resolve the issue alone unless they end up dropping 2,000-pound bombs in the region. That's probably their way of resolving human rights issues in the Middle East. #WakeUp World. It is time to take action. Enough to watch governments violate human rights and confiscate the personal liberty of their citizens.
