Something has been bothering my mind for several weeks now — internship. Yes! As a fourth year undergraduate student of chemical and process engineering, I have had the opportunity to carry out internship twice as stipulated by my university in the past two academic calendar years. But why am I reflecting on internship? Well, internship practice is the best time to ask yourself the question that I asked myself a few weeks ago “Is this what I really want to do or be for the next 10 to 40 years?” Internship gives you a glimpse of how actually your "dream career/field" is/will turn out to be. It's the time you realise that you were spot on to love and be passionate about the field or you were just lusting over it perhaps bandwagon or other reasons best known to you — it's when you get to know that you and that field incompatible. I have no doubt that internship plays a huge role in our future careers but it's also important for one to choose their internship opportunities wisely–to align with their long term career goals, vision and values. Let that internship opportunity you (blindly or knowingly) take be your "love at first sight". ______________________________ Lets connect and network. "What skills am I hoping to gain/ or improve on from my internship? Some Skills I hope to gain/ improve from my internship are Study skills Organization Lab operations Persistence During my internship, I was tasked with getting a general understanding of organic chemistry to allow for me to get a grasp of what exactly I was doing in the lab. Throughout this internship I hope to improve my study skills, since I am incredibly unfamiliar with the topic I need to learn how to grasp and self study concepts without fully relyin on someone to help me. Additionally this will help me improve on my persistence, since the lab involves working with multiple chemicals and processes I am not familiar with. It has been diffucult adapting to a foreign environment which is why I am looking to improve my tenacity during my time at the internship. At my current internship we deal with multiple dangerous chemicals and it is incredibly important to stay organized, though I have always been more on the organized side, remembering whether or not chemicals are aqueous or organic is incredibly important since when disposing them into different containers mixing could lead to dangerous reactions. One new skill I hope to aquire during my internship are lab operations. I have been familiarized with the lab and ways to navigate them in school but understanding how to conduct experiments and what procedures to do and how to do them by myself is something I hope to learn. The ways I hope to achieve these skills are to keep pushing myself into these uncomfortable situations until I can familiarize myself with them. Along with that I have to continue to be okay with being uncomfortable to help me further grow and learn these skills. Through this I am going to gain these skills and multiple more that I have yet to consider.

As we approach the end of the summer break, I wanted to share a quick recap of my internship experience. This summer, I successfully completed my second summer internship at the National Institute of Technology, Rourkela, under the guidance of Dr. Harekrushna Sahoo in the Department of Chemistry, this time focusing on the interaction of selenium nanoparticles with bone morphogenetic protein-2 using various spectroscopic techniques such as UV-vis spectroscopy, Fluorescence spectroscopy, and Circular dichroism. I also got my hands on agar plate preparation, large-scale media preparation, setting of small cultures, and many more. This experience has been transformative, enriching my academic and personal growth in countless ways. ?? A Nostalgic Return to the Lab: Returning to the campus for my second internship, this time in a different department, brought back a flood of memories. The familiarity of the environment combined with the excitement of delving into a new field was a unique blend that fueled my passion for scientific exploration. ?? Inspiring Chemistry Lab Atmosphere: The dynamic and stimulating atmosphere of the chemistry lab played a pivotal role in my internship, pushing me to delve deeper into the mysteries of protein interactions and fluorescence phenomena. The hands-on experience and exposure to using instruments like a sonicator, laminar flow hood, shaker incubator, autoclave, spectrometers were invaluable. I also learned to use softwares such as PyMOL and Origin. This experience not only allowed me to handle complex equipment but also to plot and analyze data effectively. ?? Learning and Socializing with Seniors: One of the highlights of my internship was the opportunity to interact with and learn from the PhD Scholars and seniors. Their mentorship, guidance, and shared experiences were instrumental in navigating complex research questions and understanding career pathways. ?? Embracing Change and Switching Streams: Switching to a different department from physics to chemistry for this internship was initially daunting, but it proved to be a rewarding decision. It taught me the importance of embracing change and having the confidence to explore new fields. I am grateful for this opportunity and support from my mentors, colleagues, and the entire department. As I move forward, I am eager to apply the skills and knowledge I have acquired during this internship.

Navigating Course Registrations and Degree Audits—Fun, right? But It Got Me Thinking About My Next Steps. It’s been a little while since I last wrote a post—probably about a week and a half, but who’s counting? After all, when are we ever 100% sure of anything in life? I want to share what I’ve been up to, some recent progress, and a few thoughts that have been on my mind. Reflecting on My Journey Earlier this week, I was knee-deep in course registrations and reviewing my degree audit. You know how it is—making sure all those credits line up and trying to avoid any last-minute surprises before graduation. As I was doing this, I found myself drifting towards LinkedIn, checking out blogs and job reviews. That’s when I stumbled upon a job posting from 3M. Now, 3M and I go way back—well, at least in my mind. It all started during my freshman or junior year when I first learned about their internship programs. A friend of mine even landed an internship in their lab, which made me curious about the company. Fast forward to now, and I still find myself drawn to 3M, especially their roles in manufacturing and research & development (R&D). These areas align perfectly with my interests, particularly after my own ups and downs in research. I’ve had my fair share of successes and failures, but they’ve all contributed to my growth and future plans. Looking Ahead: Minor Considerations As many of you know, I’m set to graduate in Spring 2025. But here’s the thing—I’m seriously considering declaring a minor, preferably in Biochemistry. Why Biochemistry, you ask? Well, it seems like a natural fit with my Environmental Science major and could open some exciting career pathways. That said, I’m also toying with the idea of a biology minor. Both fields are fascinating, and either one could complement my major in unique ways. But I’d love to hear your thoughts—what minor do you think would go best with Environmental Science? ?#STEM #ResearchJourney #CollegeLife #HigherEducation #AcademicGrowth #FuturePlans #CareerGoal #UniversityExperience?#ScienceStudent #Biochemistry #EnvironmentalScience #DegreeAudit #MinorAndMajor #ReaserchandDevelopment #Internships #Graduation2025 #3M

Doing Internship at DBT and CSIR Sponsored lab. Most of the students while doing master apply for Internship at these institutes, some of will get seat to do internship there, in most of the cases this will be paid internship where students have to pay and they charge huge under the name of training, first of all why you have to charge student while it is public institute it should be free in all cases. The professor under student doing internship dont even interact with students in most cases, they just assign fancy topics to intern to print on certificates most of the time that will be the topic of the PhD student working under him. Yesterday one student visited our lab she did her master in padmavati mahila university Tirupati. She done her internship in one of CSIR labs which are related to the aromatic plant She wasn't able to even say the names of what she done at CSIR , out of curiosity i told " Did you work on purifying some aromatic compounds " then she said " No we were doing HPLC " she don't even know what is mean by column, types of column,, principle of different column to separate compounds like Size exclusion, ion exchange. Now she wants a job,how someone will offer a job . she is in such a mindset, I did my Internship at a prestigious institute it will help me to get a job. Companies don't care where you have done your Internship unless and until you find them technically sound. This will be my suggestion to all of my connections. Don't get panic when you when you didn't get Internship in this institutes, you can go to any small lab to adept in techniques For any help you can Contact me. #csir #dbt #Bsc #msc #career #growth #skills #techniques #
