Change of conference format: We had planned to run this year's conference as an in-person event at the fantastic Headingly, but we have made the difficult decision to change the format to an online one.? ? This change in format allows us to offer the event as FREE to attend.? ? Changes across the sector: ? ? We know how much the sector values getting together in person, but over the past few years, we also acknowledge how resources and capacity to support this has reduced, especially following the impact of COVID-19, which has left a lasting change on how we work and how we consume content. ? ? Gather Round reminds me of a famous Mark Twain quote "there is no such thing as a new idea". The AFL - Australian Football League Gather Round concept isn’t new, National Rugby League Magic Round has been around since 2019. The idea originated from?Super League in 2007 when all 12 teams played at the Millennium Stadium in Cardiff. ? However, the AFL and NRL strategies are very different. NRL play all 8 games at Suncorp Stadium focusing?on maximising tourism and attendances in Brisbane. This year the NRL will kick off Magic Round on Thursday 15 May at Suncorp Stadium with Game 1 of the Women’s State of Origin. ? The AFL on the other hand played 9 games over the weekend across three venues including Adelaide Oval, Norwood Oval and Adelaide Hills, Mt Barker focusing on community and leveraging the elite game to invest in state league and community facilities. ? Yesterday, the SA Gov’t announced that next year a game will be played in the Barossa Valley with $20m invested to upgrade Lyndoch Recreation Park redevelopment. Meanwhile, more than 40 community football clubs across SA will get a share of $2m in funding through the South Australian Football Facilities Fund from the AFL, SANFL and state government.? ? The AFL are now preparing for Tasmania to enter the league in 2028 and floating the concept of?hosting 3 x Gather Rounds during the year including across VIC & TAS, Sydney and Perth or Adelaide. A report by SilverDoor reveals that sporting events like the UEFA EURO 2024 and the Paris 2024 Olympic Games are significantly boosting Average Daily Rates (ADRs) for serviced apartments across Europe.???? In Germany, ADRs are predicted to rise by 14% year-on-year, with Berlin seeing a 34% increase. Paris is also experiencing a 30-70% rise in ADRs due to the Olympics. One of the biggest investments associated with hosting the Olympics is infrastructure.
