?? Research Internship Highlight ?? ～ "Development of Motors for Compression" - Kyoto University × Daikin Industries ～ C-ENGINE showcases case studies of our research internships for grad students! This time, we're highlighting a project by a first-year PhD student from Kyoto University's Electrical Engineering Department, who interned at Daikin Industries, Ltd., famous for their air conditioners ?? Project: Development of Motors for Compression Q1: What kind of research are you doing at university? ?? I'm working on motor simulation technology, focusing on the basics of analytical methods. I'm interested in motors themselves and motivated to improve the performance of motors, which account for half of the energy consumption! Q2: What did your research internship involve? ?? I simulated the losses in motors used in air conditioner compressors. By combining traditional and new methods, we reduced calculation time and improved accuracy. Q3: What did you learn? ?? "Why? why? and why?" Mentors often asked me the basics, and I realized I didn’t fully understand the fundamentals. This experience helped me grow and was incredibly valuable. I also learned that while achieving research goals according to plan is essential in a corporate setting, exploring various possibilities is equally important. I aim to be a researcher who can balance both approaches! ---??? More Details ???--- [Challenges] Current air conditioner motors use complex current control, but only simple methods for evaluating iron losses were available before. The new analytical method (Play Model) is included in existing simulation software, but it has long processing times and low convenience. [Research Method] During this internship, they focused on shortening the analysis time of the new method by creating a hybrid of traditional and new methods, combining their best features. [Results] They developed a quick and accurate method for analyzing iron losses. This achievement was presented at the conference of the Institute of Electrical Engineers of Japan. Hello Connections!! I am excited to announce the successful completion of our intern project at MCET-Bosch Rexroth: "An Effective and Low-Cost Hybrid Model of Heater Control for Process Control Applications" Building upon our initial design, we have incorporated several key advancements to enhance the robustness and versatility of our Temperature Control System. Project Overview: Our temperature controller now operates in two distinct modes, with the flexibility of automatic or manual switching. Modes of Operation: 1. PLC Mode: Utilizing a programmable logic controller for precise control of the temperature process, It is the primary control mode. 2. Electronic Control Mode: Serving as a reliable fallback, it automatically takes over if the PLC fails, ensuring uninterrupted temperature control by using the Opamp controller. Switching Mechanism: 1. Automatic Switching: A 24V relay is energized by an input from the PLC. When the PLC is active, the relay is energized, connecting the pole to the normally open contact, enabling PLC mode. In the event of a PLC fault, the 24V supply to the relay is cut, switching the controller to Electronic Control mode. 2. Manual Switching: An on/off switch mounted on the control panel allows to manually change between PLC mode and Electronic mode. This project stands as a testament to our commitment to excellence in practical and technical electronics. Reflecting on my journey through engineering internships, I recently had the opportunity to present my final-year collective internship experience, tying together the complex engineering problems (CEPs) I encountered and tackled over the years. ?? From designing a portable hydraulic bench, building an electrical motor control panel, to working on a 1.5MVA transformer substation, each project came with unique challenges that demanded deep technical knowledge, resourcefulness, and collaboration across different fields. ?????? Preparing and presenting my work was a powerful moment—it gave me the chance to fully appreciate how these experiences shaped not only my technical skills but also my problem-solving approach, adaptability, and commitment to sustainability. ?? This reflection has been a true catalyst in guiding my future steps. Moving forward, I’m even more committed to pursuing roles that address complex, multidisciplinary challenges in engineering. My passion for impactful, sustainable solutions is at the heart of my career vision. This experience has strengthened my resolve to seek positions where I can bring innovative problem-solving to real-world applications in power systems, renewable energy, and industrial automation. ??
