"I was SO nervous!" This is a common refrain Unify America hears from college students whose professors assign the Unify Challenge College Bowl. And who can blame them? Understandably, the thought of getting paired with a stranger from another college who may not align with your political ideology to reason through complex societal issues sounds intimidating. Many of the students who join the College Bowl come from diverse fields such as nursing, aerospace engineering, nutrition, aviation, and criminal justice—not necessarily political science. They aren't the "hand raisers" for these types of activities. They're often not the ones found at campus debates, joining protests, or participating in civic-oriented clubs. Many hesitate to express their political views or fear confrontational discussions. Given today's climate, their reluctance makes sense. However, our democracy relies on fostering civic preparedness among the next generation. We must equip all students with the necessary skills and confidence that come from practice. Listening to students share their experiences of engaging in challenging conversations and discussing critical issues facing America today underscores the importance of our mission. We provide a scalable and measurable approach to helping Gen Z practice open inquiry, constructive disagreement, and build their civic skills. Today, we collaborate with 205 higher education institutions, and we invite you to join us in this crucial endeavor. If you are thinking of someone we should connect with or a campus you work with, please let us know. #civicpreparedness #democracy #civiclearning
Students from Georgia State University, University of North Dakota, Miami Dade College, Tarrant County College, Pikes Peak State College, and Colorado Mesa University share reflections after their conversations across differences during the Unify Challenge College Bowl. ?? Your journeys from initial nervousness to discoveries of shared goals give us hope for the future of democracy. #UnifyChallenge #StudentVoices #CivicEngagement

The world is witnessing a loss of faith in both capitalism and democracy, which seemed nearly unimaginable just a generation ago. Both are under attack by a decline in civic virtue, in the form of honesty and civility, in politics, the media, academia, and other institutions. The reestablishment of civic virtue should be our priority. Glad to see this group of College and University presidents dedicating themselves to advancing critical inquiry, free expression, and civil discourse on campus. https://lnkd.in/eJRuS2xZ

Title: “Brown v. Board of Education: The Landmark Case and Its Overlooked Consequences” “Segregation of white and colored children in public schools has a detrimental effect upon the colored children. The impact is greater when it has the sanction of the law, for the policy of separating the races is usually interpreted as denoting the inferiority of the Negro group.” These powerful words from Chief Justice Warren in Brown v. Board of Education capture the intent of this historic decision to end the “separate but equal” doctrine that had dominated the post-Civil War United States. Since 1954, Brown has been celebrated as a pivotal step toward ending segregation, standing as a “super precedent” for civil rights. But the application of Brown also had unintended, and sometimes harmful, consequences. In certain places, local and state governments twisted the decision’s language to suggest that Black students and educators came from inferior schools, justifying discriminatory practices under the guise of integration. This was not the Supreme Court’s intent. The justices likely didn’t anticipate how some would misuse Brown to further inequality. Yet, after Brown, many Black educators were demoted or marginalized, seen as less qualified solely because of the schools they came from. My great-aunt, a respected educator, faced this firsthand in my hometown. When integration came to our 70% Black district, she was demoted to menial work in an integrated school—a harsh experience shared by many. Before integration, Black schools were often nurturing environments where students gained resilience and support from teachers who understood the social challenges they faced. Integration disrupted these safe spaces, placing Black students in schools where they were sometimes met with hostility, and Black educators had to navigate classrooms where students had been conditioned to mistrust them. The impact of any Supreme Court ruling, especially one as monumental as Brown, must be understood within the context of real, lived history. Brown v. Board of Education was crucial for dismantling segregation, but we cannot ignore how people’s willingness to twist good intentions to preserve the status quo can lead to harm. Words have consequences, especially when applied by those who disregard their potential for harm. Brown was decided in 1954. Today it’s 2024. Know your history—and understand its continuing impact. #BrownvBoard #CivilRightsHistory #IntegrationImpact #BlackEducators #EducationalEquity #HistoryMatters #MulticulturalSociety https://lnkd.in/eizv73Xr
