OSWorkplace is an established family-owned company in the UK. They got in touch for help because the owners were struggling to build engagement within the wider team. While the environment in the business was friendly, the team members lacked direction. Because of this, they were disengaged and doing the bare minimum within their role. The business owners were overworked and beginning to resent the company they’d worked so hard to build. We worked with the team and owners at OSWorkplace, and over two intensive days facilitated training to build a high performing, engaged culture. As a group, they redefined their goals, values, gaps, priorities and focussed on an operating rhythm to enable collaboration and effective communication within the team. Over the next 90 days, we provided individual coaching with a strong focus on self-leadership which gave the business owners more time to focus on the long-term strategic direction of the company. Fast forward one year, and the implementation of our 90-day training and coaching resulted in the team taking ownership of their roles and responsibilities, and the business profits doubling on the previous year. Most importantly for the business owners, they had a business that enabled the life they wanted, instead of consuming it. THE TWO SIDES OF “CORPORATIONS ARE A TEAM SPORT” Like anything, the idea, “corporations are a team sport” has both negative and positive aspects. When we use this belief as justification to sustain homogeneity—to weed out the outliers, or stifle divergent thought and behaviors, we can prevent ourselves and our enterprises from the gift that is growth, creativity, and innovation that arises when our world and ways are challenged enabling new possibilities to emerge. On the other hand, the idea, “corporations are a team sport” can be incredibly useful when applied to incentive systems—especially in times of change and uncertainty when collaborative, positive workplace environments are critical to long game success. So what’s the secret recipe? When we reward and elevate leaders based on their “how” (collaborative, values-centric) as well as their “what” (market results, financial performance) we create the kind of workplace environments where most everyone—not just the superstars—rises to the occasion to do their part that is required for successful enterprise transformation. The hardest lesson to learn from my experience in the trenches? Raise up the superstars—remarkableness should have its rewards. But don’t give them a behavioral “free pass;” give them training and development. We owe that to them (and everyone else.) The bonus?
