#ProgramSpotlight: Countering Trafficking in Persons in #TheGambia ?? In 2024, ABA ROLI launched a new program in The Gambia funded by the U.S. Department of State Office to Monitor and Combat #TraffickinginPersons, with the aim to address the capacity gaps in prosecuting traffickers, protecting trafficked and vulnerable populations, and preventing trafficking across the country. We will take a foundation-building approach, focusing on #sustainability through knowledge transfer to key anti-trafficking actors, including the judiciary, police, social welfare and shelter staff, civil society organizations, the National Agency Against Trafficking in Persons, and the National Human Rights Commission. Our team in The Gambia will also establish a survivor-led Review and Validation Panel, made up of participants from survivors' rights groups and local experts in countering TIP. This panel will provide feedback on program activity creation and implementation as part of our commitment to #peoplecenteredjustice. What Kids Behind Bars Need: Mentors Who've Been There Across the U.S., so-called "tough-on-crime" measures targeting children and teens are on the rise. In Washington, D.C, the City Council is considering a bill that would require more aggressive prosecution of young people who commit certain crimes. Texas wants to build more juvenile detention centers. And in Tennessee, child welfare advocates say they were baffled when a bill that would have strengthened oversight of child detention centers - aimed at protecting kids from solitary confinement - failed to pass. If the goal is to create a better future for younger generations, the focus needs to be on helping young people rehabilitate and transition out of incarceration, not on finding new ways to put them behind bars. Domestic violence is a complex issue, but one thing remains clear—change is possible. As group facilitators of the Domestic Abuse Prevention Program within the Foundation for Social Welfare Services, Ilona Deguara and I witness firsthand the power of accountability by confronting past behaviours and embracing new ways of relating to others. Let’s continue to challenge the stigma around domestic violence and foster environments where change and accountability are not only possible but encouraged. Together, we can break the cycle. I want to thank the dedicated professionals working tirelessly within the field of domestic violence, and the senior management teams whose constant commitment and investment make this program possible. Finally, I want to extend my heartfelt congratulations to the individuals who have successfully completed our Domestic Abuse Prevention Program. They are now ambassadors in the movement to end domestic violence. This milestone is more than a personal achievement—it’s a commitment to growth, accountability, and creating positive change in the world. #DomesticViolence #AmbassadorsForChange #BreakTheCycle #Transformation #HealingAndGrowth #Congratulations

IN WHAT THE PAPERS SAY!! Advocacy for Child Justice (ACJ) expresses concern over the escalating number of street children, attributing the phenomenon to the need for strengthened policies. Despite ongoing efforts, a lasting solution to this crisis remains elusive. The vulnerability inherent in children is heightened by living on the street, posing significant risks acknowledged by the government and various stakeholders. As we continue to commemorate our 10th Anniversary of the ACJ Community Correctional Centre, we renew our call for the comprehensive formulation and effective implementation of policies aimed at safeguarding children's welfare and preventing street exposure. Operating with a preventative approach, our organization emphasizes the necessity of sustainable programs to deter juvenile delinquency and ensure that once removed from the streets, children do not return to such precarious circumstances. #ACJZambia #10YearsofHope #ACJCCC

U.S. Marshals Find 200 Missing Children Across the Nation During Operation We Will Find You 2 The U. S. Marshals Service, along with federal, state, and local agencies in seven federal judicial districts and geographical locations across the United States, led a six-week national operation that resulted in finding 200 critically missing children, which includes endangered runaways and those abducted by noncustodial persons. Operation We Will Find You 2 (OWWFY2), the second-of-its-kind nationwide missing child operation, was conducted from May 20 to June 24 and focused on geographical areas with high clusters of critically missing children. Children who go missing may be in serious danger and can be vulnerable to child sex trafficking, abuse, exploitation, and other crimes against children. With technical assistance from the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children (NCMEC), OWWFY2 resulted in the recovery and removal of 123 children from dangerous situations. An additional 77 missing children were located and found to be in safe locations, according to law enforcement or child welfare agencies. Of the 200 children found, 173 were endangered runaways, 25 were considered otherwise missing, one was a family abduction, and one was a non-family abduction. The youngest child recovered was five months old. 14 of the children were found outside the city where they went missing. Additionally, of the missing children recovered, 57% were recovered within seven days of the USMS assisting with the case. Read more: https://lnkd.in/gPjNYz98
