"I write to remind us that we are a powerful community. Since our inception, our AAPI Women Lead community has met challenges and catastrophes head on, and we have done this together - with you. We’ve done this through the unapologetic leadership of our Asian, Native Hawaiian, Pacific Islander women, girls, and non-binary communities. At the center of our work is our commitment to and our holistic approach to ending gender violence against our ANHPI communities. We are survivor-led and survivor-powered. This is how we build our new worlds." Read the full letter by signing up for our newsletter on our website at aapiwl.org.

Despite persistent efforts from grassroots initiatives to global advocacy, women continue to endure injustices that underscore profound disparities. Today, we reaffirm our commitment to advocate for victims of war crimes, racial violence, gender-based violence, caste-based violence, and crimes against humanity. In recent years, we have faced unprecedented challenges, including rising violence against LGBTQI+ communities, increasing authoritarianism, economic instability, setbacks in women's human rights, and environmental crises. These intersecting issues disproportionately affect structurally marginalised groups, making initiatives like Power Up! (#PU!) more critical than ever. ??? As a consortium of feminist organisations, Power Up! supports womxn-led collectives, movements, and organisations in their efforts to challenge and dismantle oppressive structures of power across 17 countries. The struggles of our PU! partners demonstrate that, despite these mounting challenges, creating spaces of hope, solidarity, and transformative power is essential to challenging harmful norms, defending civic space, and fostering economic empowerment. ?? Last month, at the MDT closing ceremony event, I had a fascinating conversation with Stefany Vizcarra from NIMD | Netherlands Institute for Multiparty Democracy about the importance of including women in peace-making processes without reinforcing stereotypes. Here are some key takeaways: - Women are not just untapped resources in the peace-making process; they are individuals with rights who are directly affected by conflict and therefore should be actively included. - Emphasizing women as peacemakers solely based on gender stereotypes risks undermining their true capabilities, such as critical thinking and creativity, which are essential for excelling in peace processes. - Failure to change existing rhetoric may inadvertently strengthen the very systems that perpetuate the exclusion of women in peace-building efforts. It was enlightening to discuss these critical aspects with Stefany, shedding light on the importance of inclusive and stereotype-free approaches to involving women in peace processes. #Peacebuilding #GenderEquality #Inclusion

Tulika Srivastava explores the concept of Resource Justice, and it's integral role in ending discrimination and inequality of various kinds, including GBV. She highlights the intricate relationship between social equity and the fair allocation of resources. Tulika shares how claiming economic, environmental, and social resources is fundamental to achieving?a life free of violence and inequality. During the 16 days of activism, her insights become even more important, expanding the notion of equality to include funding practices. Co creation and participation of women, LBTQI plus people from marginalised communities in determining where and how financial resources flow is key to building sustainable solutions to ending gender based violence. #resourcejustice?#16daysofactivism?#socialjustice?#sawfin?#marginalizedvoices

?? Listening with empathy, embracing accountability, and promoting allyship are powerful ways to foster meaningful growth and positive change. – Urbenia Kgwarae, Former Youth Chairperson, MenEngage Africa For the?#HowToTalkWithMen?campaign, Urbenia Kgwarae shares three essential tips for transformative conversations with men and boys: ?1?? Listen with empathy and openness: Create judgment-free spaces where men feel heard and understood. Simple acknowledgments like "I hear you" or "That sounds challenging" can build trust and openness.? 2?? Embrace accountability as growth: Encourage men to see accountability as strength, not weakness. Support them in owning their mistakes as steps toward becoming their best selves.? 3?? Promote allyship and positive support: Allyship can start small, like calling out harmful jokes or stereotypes with phrases like, "We can do better." These actions inspire others to stand up too. ?? Let’s create spaces where men can embrace the potential of gender justice, for?#WomensRights,?#EndingViolenceAgainstWomen, and for addressing the challenges in their own lives. Yesterday, on #Juneteenth and the International Day for the Elimination of Sexual Violence in Conflict #CRSV I had the honor of moderating a member state briefing with our sibling UN agencies and civil society on the importance of investing in initiatives like the UN's #SpotlightInitiative. In acknowledging the role of Afro-descendent women in the fight to end slavery and the continued fight to end racism and achieve gender equality, and the significance of this day as a marker of the moment that slaves in Texas - where slavery was meant to have legally ended over two years earlier - were finally made aware of their freedom, I drew parallels with Spotlight Initiative’s mission. Spotlight Initiative's programs grow out of the voices and lived experiences of historically marginalized women who are working in the movement for equal rights. Our whole-of-society approach means that no law is passed without accompanying actions that meaningfully socialize that law for those who could most benefit from it. ? Drawing parallels to the International Day for the Elimination of Sexual Violence in Conflict, I recalled that Spotlight Initiative was built to explicitly advance two #SustainableDevelopmentGoals. Most obviously, Spotlight Initiative drives progress on #Goal5 for gender equality. But importantly, Spotlight Initiative was also developed to advance #Goal16 to promote peaceful and inclusive societies. Spotlight Initiative takes an “everything, everywhere, all at once” approach to our work: holistic action, in all contexts, hitting the issue from all angles for maximum impact. We invest in building gender-equitable institutions that facilitate democratic societies. Our deep investments in and orientation around civil society voice and leadership has opened civic space for dialogue in some of the most politically unstable global contexts. ? Yet both here in the US and in the countries where we work, we know more needs to be done to fight the pervasive racism, sexism, and systemic discriminatory practices that continue to hinder women and girls from living full and active lives, and that prevent women’s movements from engaging in the critical activist work that is essential to advancing and sustaining program gains. ? Member state briefings such as this one are critical to diversifying our partners and ensuring adequate funds are available to build the world we want for women and girls to thrive. https://lnkd.in/eb8iXY-9
