This is fascinating. True community journalism is different. It's hyper local and focuses on the community it serves, with the goal of giving as much I-can-only-get-this-from-you content as possible. In order to create a successful newsroom you need to really (really) understand that. And then nurture it. #localjournalism #journalismmatters
The Kansas City Beacon is held up as a nonprofit news success story. It's Wichita newsroom, meanwhile, hasn't been fully staffed since January 2022.
Why does the Wichita Beacon keep losing reporters?

Three standout observations from the latest Institute for Nonprofit News Index Report: 1?? Local outlets that experience revenue growth tend to be younger and leaner. 2?? Earned revenue, including dollars from advertising, underwriting, and sponsorship, is perhaps the most underutilised revenue stream for nonprofit news. 3?? Outlets that spend more on revenue generation report only 29% of total budgets coming from grants. This suggests that as an organisation matures, it is able to invest in building revenue from individual giving and earned revenue, paving the way for long-term sustainability. Why should journalists care whether readers see nonprofit news as distinctive? It comes down to the values of trust and credibility — and of convincing audiences that those qualities are worthy of support. It should matter to the public that in order to get nonprofit tax status, news organizations by statute must serve the public interest — they must be “organized exclusively and operated primarily” for an education, charitable or social welfare purpose. The challenge: Find a way to make it clear to their communities that there is a nonprofit news difference. https://lnkd.in/e_gG7KZm

It's a nerdy guide with lots of data about nonprofit newsrooms in the U.S. We Institute for Nonprofit News call it the INN Index. If you care about the public receiving factual, deeply reported journalism, it's a must read. Academics, funders, local and state lawmakers dig it. Interesting findings about audience & the financial health of the sector. Our members spend hours filling out the surveys, our staff spends months organizing the findings. #INNDays So BOOM! ?? IYKYK. Congrats to our wonderful research team. So many nuggets in the Index to help news outlets, our members, with fundraising. The INN Index is here:

"Research has shown that the work of nonprofit local news organizations makes a big impact in supporting local democracy. 'Overall, we find strong support that nonprofit watchdog journalism can serve an important, supplemental role in shoring up government accountability that can help mitigate the impact of the declines of local newspapers,' scholars Nikki Usher and Sanghoon Kim-Leffingwell wrote." At EAPM, we fully believe the nonprofit model is the only way we can build an accessible newsroom that produces accessible news products while still being a watchdog and producing quality news. It's why we ask the community, grant providers, and businesses to donate and be a part of our work. We can't do this if we we put profits first. No; we're putting accessibility (and news and people) first.

Though I prefer to stay out of the spotlight, as Verified News Network (VNN) Owner and President, I feel compelled to start speaking out about the realities of Native-owned media. Press Forward recently announced more than 200 newsrooms will receive funding as part of their “Open Call on Closing Local Coverage Gaps”. https://lnkd.in/gP6GDARk It was our understanding that nonprofits and for-profit companies would be eligible for funding. After an examination of Press Forward’s grantee database, I am disappointed to report our team did not find any Native-owned for-profit media in this selection. Native-owned VNN Oklahoma, serving Indigenous communities in northeast Oklahoma, was one that applied but was not selected.?I do not know how many others applied and were not selected. In the grantee pool database, our team found the following Indigenous-focused non-profits had been selected: Sāmoana Media: A social enterprise that focuses on promoting Samoan and other Pacific Islander initiatives. The Sunlight Media Collective: An organization of Indigenous and non-Indigenous media makers and activists, including Wabanaki tribal members. Underscore Native News: A nonprofit that produces Indigenous-centered journalism. We congratulate them and encourage others to explore their work. Sadly, 3 out of 205 Indigenous-focused selections (1.4 percent) is in line with current philanthropic level of support for Indigenous initiatives (0.5 percent). We had hoped to see some of the equality, if not equity, Press Forward promised for Indigenous communities. But as the Native American population in the US is nearly 3 percent, it appears this round has missed the mark in both categories. Our team reached out to Press Forward to confirm their Indigenous selections but have not heard back at this time. In the face of relentless inequality, VNN remains committed to supporting Native-owned media. We encourage Native-owned news companies and Native citizens looking to start news companies to consider us a FREE resource. VNN is currently scheduling meetings for free news consultation, media production, and instruction on how to leverage our social news media platform for story promotion and monetization. We see you. You are not alone. And we are here for you. #NativeOwned #News #Equity

A thought-provoking article about donors and universities that can be readily applied to museums: What I Learned About Donor Power From Trying to Hire Nikole Hannah-Jones (Susan King, Chronicle of Philanthropy) I was dean at UNC-Chapel Hill when a donor pressure campaign blew up the appointment of the 1619 Project author. Clearer donor guidelines would have prevented this. [We need] new rules and new, occasionally uncomfortable, conversations about expectations, values, and the role of donors. University leaders and development staff can start by asking themselves some basic questions: How do you honestly recruit alumni, business leaders, and foundations to support an institution’s larger mission without selling out? How do you take their money and make it clear that they don’t control how it’s spent? How do you candidly create a relationship in which financial investments are not theirs to control? What do you do when a donor’s political, emotional, or personal agenda doesn’t align with your institution’s goals, whether those of a university or other nonprofit? Donors must understand that their contributions don’t buy anything within a university besides supporting higher education’s mission to create knowledge, to question everything, to unsettle conventional thought, to research the past, and to discover the future. https://lnkd.in/gJEjTJuP

Interestingly, a measured majority of audiences don't recognize a distinct difference between nonprofit and for-profit news reporting, as those who look for it can certainly find it. I believe this challenge raises more questions about critical thinking and media literacy, which in today’s information era are all about essential. How can we build trust in reporting? How can we trust the things we see and hear? These are bigger questions that our society has seemingly not yet begun to reckon with. #Nonprofit #News #Reporting #Leadership #Culture
