Schools (K-12) are arguably the most important building type we create. They represent not only institutions for learning, but they help to define the communities they serve. It's important to build them right. If you're in the Portland, Oregon area, this in-person learning opportunity is not to be missed. #SchoolConstruction #ResilientDesign #Schools
I am very excited to announce an upcoming symposium on September 27th at the historic McMenamins Kennedy School. This one day event is focused on K-12 school construction in Oregon. We all want healthy and safe buildings for our students and educators, and that starts early in the planning process. Join us for a day of connecting and learning about sustainable and resilient school design! Inspiring Minds:?Creating Resilient & Responsible Educational Spaces https://lnkd.in/gB7UrRnH

Really looking forward to this. Question for service designers out there: what do you think a teenager should know about #servicedesign as a career? Could be something inspiring or even a reality check!
This week we've been selecting participants for 2024 programme. There are some stellar sign-ups from Greenford High School and it been tough picking only 30 students to join us on the 3-day Service Design course in October coached by Simon Gough and Mo-Ling Chui at University of West London. #ServiceDesign #LondonForEveryone

Think back to your childhood. Did you ever feel like you were lost in the crowd at school? Maybe you were one of many students in a large classroom, where the teacher's attention was spread thin. Perhaps you struggled with certain subjects but didn't receive the support you needed because the curriculum was rigid and one-size-fits-all. These experiences are not uncommon and can leave lasting impressions on our educational journey. Traditional educational models, while structured and systematic, often fail to address the unique needs of each student. The emphasis on uniformity and standardized testing can lead to students feeling overlooked, especially those who may not fit the typical mold. This can result in disengagement, lack of motivation, and a sense of being lost in the system. What was your experience like in school as a kid? This is Career Connected Learning in ACTION! ??? "Engaging in real-world projects within the classroom setting allows students to connect with their community in a meaningful way. It also enables them to put into practice the industry knowledge and employability skills they have been honing." #TeamOregonBuild #CCLOregon #HandsOnLearning #OregonCTE #OregonEducators
Exciting news from Glencoe High School and Liberty High School! Their Construction and Sustainable Design CTE programs have teamed up with Team Oregon Build to work on service-based learning construction projects. These projects aim to tackle local housing needs and support disaster recovery efforts. During my visit to GHS, I saw instructor Todd Patterson and his students reviewing the blueprint for their upcoming project. Engaging in real-world projects within the classroom setting allows students to connect with their community in a meaningful way. It also enables them to put into practice the industry knowledge and employability skills they have been honing. #CommunityEngagement #ConstructionProjects #CTEPrograms #teamoregonbuild #hsdccp #cteworks #construction #odeccl #careerconnectedlearning

With one of the largest K-12 practices in the country, PBK Architects is a great source for checking in on the latest trends. Building Design+Construction Media recently chatted with Dan Boggio, AIA, LEED AP, NCARB, Founder & Executive Chair, and Melissa Turnbaugh, AIA, NCARB, Partner & National Education & Innovation Leader, who reported that K-12 construction is alive and well, particularly in Texas, Calif. and Fla. where there’s been an unprecedented number of school referendums. Another major trend is school boards showing much interest in evidence-based research supporting learning. Consequently, more schools are requesting outdoor learning spaces, experiential learning environments and extra-curricular arts and sports programs and facilities—all of which have been shown to enhance learning for students. “In this environment we’re in where school boards are ready to adopt research-based design,… it’s the design community’s responsibility to harvest this research and then design accordingly. We can change the lives of students,” states Boggio. #architecture #k12design #schooldesign #engineering #outdoorlearning
