Criminal Legal Aid is no longer fit for purpose and this is having a profound impact on committed and dedicated legal professionals who have been under unsustainable pressure?to support this demand-led public service.??A properly funded criminal justice system is vitally important for victims of crime, those accused of offences and everyone across wider society. An appropriately resourced Legal Aid programme delivers social and economic benefits across society and effects savings across Government departments, such as health and education. An efficient Legal Aid system also assists in delivering safer communities by contributing to speedy and fair justice, delivering access to justice to all citizens. #AccessToJusticeInCrisis

When it comes to addressing the family violence crisis in Australia, we owe it to victims and survivors - and their children - to do more. Community Legal Centres are an essential part of the family violence service system for victims of family violence. Place based community legal services are not just about legal assistance; we are about understanding the whole picture. Beyond legal assistance, victims/survivors often face a myriad of intertwined issues, such as tenancy issues, employment rights violations, migration issues and broader social challenges like access to housing, counselling and health care. These interconnected problems need integrated solutions that go beyond legal representation alone. Community Legal Centre teams do not just include lawyers; we have social workers, community workers, youth workers and financial counsellors too. We work to help victims/survivors to navigate the often-overwhelming legal system and rebuild their lives with dignity and security. Fighting for human rights to be realised is a daily reality many Australians face. Hard to hear for many, but this is the truth of the matter. Privilege has a perspective that often does not have a sufficient vantage point (or ability) to see and respond to the circumstances of those less fortunate. I have been working in the community law space for more than two years now. It's a great honour to support such important work that is sadly often invisible to most. Why is it invisible? Because it isn't big money land, community lawyers and allied professionals are often working directly with the most under privileged, marginalised or/and chronically dismissed.
