Those are not fish, they have no heads! They are not in water! ? My 4-year-old can be a bit absolutist in her views, assuming the life she knows is the only one possible. She is about to get her first lesson in the cultural nuances of global sales. ? We are in a Whole Foods in Phoenix, Arizona and my mother is trying to buy tilapia. Fish in the Arizona is typically bought in the grocery store, on ice, decapitated, scaled and cut into cookable filets. Luckily, my mother has lived in Asia, and gets that in my daughter’s world of Hong Kong’s New Territories, fish can be bought whole, and in some cases, they can be selected whilst still alive, hence my daughter’s indignant statement (and the equal bewilderment of Whole Foods staff). She patiently explains that people around the world have different ways of buying and selling things, there is no right or wrong way, just every place is special and different and we need to adapt ourselves to local practices in order to succeed in getting what we want easily. ? Ramon Ang’s food and beverage conglomerate San Miguel has loaded up on debt and is remaking itself into an infrastructure giant. For Ang, 70, the pivot is a chance to cement his legacy—reengineering the food and beverage giant into an infrastructure colossus that is literally remaking the Philippines from the bedrock up. Over the next five years, Ang has earmarked capital expenditure of 1.4 trillion pesos, of which 86%, or 1.2 trillion pesos, will be deployed to expand the company’s infrastructure footprint. Thank you to ETI Sweden, the buyers (Axfood and ICA), berry company (Olle Svensson), and a Thai staffing company, TP Thai Pickers and its Swedish partner company, Rangsater, for joining a collaborative and open dialogue on refining the BRIDGE Box Application to strengthen human rights due diligence, remediation, and risk mitigation within the Swedish berry supply chain and discussed on the solutions for the challenging social compliance issues. This season, TP Thai Picker and its partners employed the BRIDGE Box platform to capture feedback directly from pickers, providing real-time insight into their experiences and enabling more responsive issue resolution. Over more than three-month picking period from mid of July till end of October , the platform registered more than 200 cases, highlighting positive experiences and areas of concern. While initial results demonstrate the platform's potential, our conversation identified areas for improvement —such as onboarding processes, user training, feature utilization, and case management—that could enhance future deployment. We also discussed ways to leverage data from pickers to inform proactive remediation and preventive actions for the 2025 season. The dialogue underscored the importance of ongoing improvement in due diligence practices across the berry sector in Sweden, aligning efforts towards ethical labor standards and robust risk management.
