Mayor Russ Barley likes to make the rounds in Freeport, delivering progress reports to service clubs and other gatherings. He talks about efforts by the city to develop infrastructure in anticipation of growth rather than in response to it. He cites work to expand the city’s existing wastewater treatment facility and its plans to build a second one on the east side of town. He lists businesses that are new to Freeport: Circle K, Pizza Hut, Emerald Coast Title Co., 331 Noodles, Tool Expo and Otto’s Car Wash. He cites development orders—approved, pending and anticipated—and reports that the city can be expected to grow to 30,000 in population in the next 10 years. This is another example of Winnipeg's short sighted planning. A few years back the city invested in enhancements to St James Street and Empress. St James Street is one of the busiest streets in Winnipeg and is always subject to problems. When the city was investing millions of dollars to retrofit these streets, the smart thing to do would have been to make St James and Empress both 1-way streets, each with 3-4 lanes of traffic. Expropriating property on St James Street would also have been an option, since the west side of the street is largely parking lots. Instead, Winnipeg is doing what Winnipeg does best, and install traffic lights as a bandaid solution for lack of planning and foresight. #Winnipeg #poli #wpgpoli #politics https://lnkd.in/gsK395Ug

What has the King’s Speech got to do with fish & chips? Chew Valley Lake is a beautiful setting with a great fish & chip shop, a café and plenty of activity happening on the lake. The lake is thriving with nature. There are 260 different species of birds recorded there. The lake is used for plenty of leisure activities. What’s less obvious at first sight is that the lake is a Bristol Water reservoir and provides Bristol with much of its drinking water. It was built in the 1950s to store water from the Mendip Hills before it heads to homes and businesses. If we look ahead to the potential £88bn of water investment planned, opportunities to create spaces like Chew Valley Lake will offer decades, perhaps centuries of benefit to millions of people. The ambition from government in the King’s Speech is to get the UK building. To do that, we can’t let progress stop because new infrastructure might be unpopular with a vocal minority. But we need to bring people with us and that means talking about infrastructure, focusing on what matters to the majority - things like chips by a lake on a sunny evening. #infrastructure #water #amp8

Could the ‘grey belt’ be the answer to meet future housing demand in Kent and Medway or are we already ahead of the curve with the likes of Otterpool Park, where half the total area will be retained as open space. Interesting piece here in The Times about how ‘ugly’ parts of the green belt like car parks and former industrial areas could free up space for between 100,000 and 500,000 homes nationwide. All part of a long standing debate between our political leaders on how best to meet the county’s housing needs and unlock future growth while protecting the green and open space that makes this region one of the best places to live in the UK. ??https://lnkd.in/e25FFZ3f #JoinusinKent

What do you know about Fishermans Bend? Located on the outskirts of Melbourne’s CBD, it’s a crucial part of the city’s development as Australia’s largest urban renewal precinct. This area has the potential to significantly contribute to Melbourne’s economic growth.? The Department of Transport and Planning has published a draft Development Contributions Plan (DCP) to support over 120 ‘essential infrastructure’ projects in Fishermans Bend, covering open spaces, streets, community hubs, and flood mitigation.? The Committee welcomes the draft DCP and the Open Space Uplift (OSU) incentive. Our submission to the consultation highlights that consideration of both ‘essential’ and ‘catalytic’ infrastructure is required, including integrated planning, public transport, an innovation ecosystem, and the protection of the Port of Melbourne’s operations.? These key considerations for the successful implementation of a Fishermans Bend initiative will shape a prosperous future for the precinct.? As reported in the Times today, Kier Starmer's discussion on Green Belt release is a promising development in tackling the UK's growing Housing Crisis. The urgency for a comprehensive strategy to increase housing supply cannot be overstated. Incorporating brownfield and greenfield sites, building new settlements, and releasing Green Belt land are all essential components of addressing this crisis. I hope this discussion goes someway to dispelling the public misconception that all Green Belt land is environmentally valuable and must be preserved at all costs. Many areas classified as Green Belt are actually used for industrial purposes, golf courses, or agricultural activities - known as "grey belt." The protection of Green Belt land has hindered the development of sustainable housing near job opportunities and amenities for years, pushing development into less sustainable areas and forcing commuters into their cars. A proper review and release of of the Green Belt land through regional planning will lead to the creation of well-planned, sustainable communities - and the new homes we all need. #Boyer #Leaders Romans Group #housingcrisis #planning https://lnkd.in/eRmZ9Kde
