Third month into my hiring, management fired the SEO Specialist on my team and started questioning me as a Marketing Manager. Not because he wasn't producing results, but because the company wasn't ready for this hire. So here's what happened. The SEO Specialist was hired before me. And when I took on the role of Manager, I immediately put in the request for a content/copywriter. But the company rejected my request. Simply because they didn't understand how SEO and content go hand in hand. I'm sure you can understand what happens next. The SEO results were extremely limited. And because we didn't see a huge increase in organic traffic ... The company fired the poor guy. All because the management had no clear vision or a brand plan. Nor did they have an understanding of who to hire to execute their marketing plan properly. The lesson? The amount of available marketing talent on this app is staggering. So many incredible people are open to work. In part, I’d estimate it is related to the over obsession with attribution that has plagued demand marketers the last half decade. The technology we use has gotten amazing but the attribution methodologies have just gotten so muddled between first, multi, self attribution styles, what marketing reports, what the CFO looks at, anecdotal data, even program and campaign tags…heck, even Hubspot has multiple source types. The only measurement is “is it all going up?”…revenue, requests, deals, velocity, etc. So it seems like maybe in part because of the attribution obsession, there is a shift away from demand to PLG or Prod Marketing or Social. They all have a role to play. But the demand gen folks, all the people right now open to work here, can literally do it all. Maybe they just weren’t empowered to push the organization to the cutting edge of what works to drive demand. Anyway, hire these incredible marketers before the tide turns and they’re all off the market! #hiringrant
