The Empire State Building in New York isn't just a marvel of architecture; it's also a prime example of American expertise in merchandising. Within this historic skyscraper, visitors encounter a sophisticated array of merchandise that brilliantly showcases how cultural icons can be leveraged in retail. This strategic merchandising serves not only as a revenue stream but also as a way to extend the visitor experience beyond the observation decks. Educational materials about the building's history, architecture, and role in American culture are presented alongside a variety of themed merchandise. Products range from detailed architectural models and historical books to apparel that tastefully celebrates New York City's heritage. This approach not only caters to the diverse tastes of global tourists but also enriches their understanding of the landmark. Through thoughtful merchandising, the Empire State Building demonstrates how to blend educational content with commercial opportunities, making it a model for the tourism industry.

"A curated view of where innovation is happening in marketing today, why it matters, and how it is transforming modern business". --- Contemporary kiosks. Some interventions in the urban fabric can radically transform the perception of a square, a street, or a commercial activity. I want to highlight this one, which concerns architecture, design, and especially creativity. The French studio Heams & Michel Architectes has developed an interesting idea for a public square in Cannes, creating seven prefabricated kiosks with geometric aluminum lattices that can be adapted to various uses. Despite their identical design, the pavilions are used as fast food kiosks, one as service storage, and one containing public toilets. Another two pavilions will be used by bowlers, who frequently play this sport in the public space around the structures. Called 7 Kiosks, the project is part of a broader effort to renovate the Allées de la Liberté, a street between the port and the old town that hosts local markets. The structures are closed when not in use and are equipped with light strips to illuminate the public area at night. ?? What’s your take? # 339 ARCHITECTURE, France ?? What are the realities of an aging building? This question echoed throughout a recent seminar hosted by Spatial Anatomy during Singapore Design Week, where they unveiled their upcoming book, “Singapore Strata Malls: A Retrospective for the Future.” The term “Strata Mall” may sound unfamiliar to some, yet in Singapore, these mid-century structures - with their fragmented ownership models and pragmatic architecture - tell a different kind of story. Built in the 1970s and 1980s, strata malls quietly resist the shiny fa?ades of modern developments, despite the scarcity of land and tightly regulated property landscape. These buildings were not designed to impress. Their forms are utilitarian, often plain. Yet they pulse with life, embedded with memories, commercial exchanges, and the quiet persistence of community. Function over form - that was the priority. Today, the question is whether that function is still relevant, or if these outdated malls should give way to sleek, open designs that mirror contemporary retail experiences. The seminar emphasized what is often overlooked: strata malls are more than tired fa?ades; they are cultural landmarks, weaving together the stories of their often multigenerational tenants. This conversation struck a familiar chord for me. In my research on the decline of the kiosk, I encountered the same dilemma. Are these spaces simply obsolete, or are they opportunities for reinvention? Much like kiosks, strata malls are more than their economic value. They are the soul of a neighbourhood, standing at the intersection of utility and memory. The question remains: Is rehabilitation the answer, or is inevitable retirement on the horizon? For those interested in digging deeper into the research behind this, more information can be found here: https://futuremalls.org/ #Architecture #UrbanHeritage #SingaporeDesign #AdaptiveReuse
