This book continues to show its relevance as general managers like Brad Stevens continue to use statistics and find underrated guys to fill out the Boston Celtics Championship level roster. Adding sharpshooters like Lonnie Walker and drafting Creighton senior Baylor Scheierman making a championship team even better. Creativity is always a mechanism to keep up. At a minimum, Blakeney deserves credit for pursuing a path to ascension instead of waiting for one. His biggest asset may be the proof that sports team/organization ownership is always a winning investment. His biggest problem may be the formation of a players' union (and total return to a prospective owner). Owners don't like unions. Last, Blakeney would have to manage the school's influence vs. the program owner's influence. And the players. And parents. And recruiting. All are already significant challenges for a coach.

The platoon of Gafford and Lively at the 5 is 48-minutes of lob threats, quality rebounding, and solid paint protection behind PJ, which is exciting and cheap for coming campaigns. Parting with a 2027 first (top-2 protected) is Dallas firing one of their only bullets at this time...I like this team construct but it's a huge gamble with DEN/LAC looming. Mavs might've rushed this. Haunting in the context of PJ being the last RFA available six months ago too...and now a 1st is coughed up for him. This could be a compounding series of mistakes that adds up to be a failure: Parting with draft capital to acquire Grant Williams, sending more out alongside trading him, and — counting the Gafford deal — only adding 2 rotation players for 2 firsts at the deadline.
