Many of you might have watched the incredible upset of #5 Notre Dame at the hands of Northern Illinois University (NIU) on Saturday night. While these upsets are why I absolutely love college football, it was the post-game comments by NIU head coach, Thomas Hammock that really captured me and so effectively illustrated the power of vulnerability in leadership. Minutes after NIU blocked a game-winning field goal to clinch the win, Coach Hammock was interviewed.?Tears welling in his eyes, you could see and feel the emotion as he began to describe the landmark win. “I’m so proud of our kids, the coaches, just everybody. They believed. They believed. And we came here and got it done.” “I told them all week: We don’t need luck. We just gotta be our best, and they were their best today, and we were able to get it done.” Authentic leaders, like Coach Hammock challenge us to simply be our best and that through our hard work and effort, we can accomplish the greatest of goals.?But, through his tears and his clear expression of love for his players and the joy of seeing their success he showed his vulnerability.?The power of love, commitment, focus, and belief created the strength to topple a giant. Brené Brown tells us, "Vulnerability sounds like truth and feels like courage.
