Happy National Nonprofit Day! My first corporate job was at a nonprofit organization. Some of the most life and career changing positions I’ve held have been at nonprofits. I’ve worked for small local ones (yes, I have a former boss who is a nun. Habit and all!). I have also worked for international nonprofits. We get comfortable calling them “organizations” but many people forget nonprofits are actual corporations and subject to many similar, if not the same, federal and state regulations governing the work of corporate bodies in this country. Although they vary from local youth sports clubs to human rights advocacy, their goals are, by law, philanthropic in nature; meaning the goal is not profit but progress. Nonetheless, nonprofits are crucial entities in our communities; conducting important business that can often be a matter of life and death for just one family, or even a major shift in the justice system that impacts all of us . Let go of the image of people walking about in comfy hoodies, tees and shorts, or flip flops, with the founder being a little old cat lady with mailing lists piled in her desk. (Shout out to the fabulous Cat Ladies out there!) To be honest, I’ve worked at nonprofits with stricter dress codes than some for-profits or firms. I know when I was managing one myself, I made it a key part of our brand to always present ourselves professionally, on and off-site Some of the best lessons I’ve learned as a professional took place at nonprofit organizations and I’m proud so say that nonprofit operation and management is one of my areas of expertise. What could be more brat than starting a non-profit because you lost an election? In the words of Charlie XCX, “You’re just like that girl who is a little messy and likes to party and maybe says some dumb things sometimes. Who feels herself but maybe also has a breakdown. But kind of like, parties through it, is very honest, very blunt. A little bit volatile. Like, does dumb things. But it’s brat. You’re brat. That’s brat.” Iykyk. Starting a non-profit as high school students is one of the most brat things we’ve done. Emerging in this field can be messy, and there are many obstacles that we face each and every day. There are fees. Forms. Legalities. It’s the exact opposite of clean. But we party through it. We party through it because our mission, centered on creating pathways for intersectional growth in sustainability, equity, and education, is one that can change the lives of the future generation.
